SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 15, 2012
We have found the MESSIAH: JESUS CHRIST, who brings us truth and grace!
“Eureka, Eureka.”
According to legend, the ruler Hieros II asked the Greek philosopher Archimedes to find a method for determining whether a crown was made of pure gold or of gold mixed with silver.
One day when Archimedes stepped into his bath and noticed that the water rose as he sat down, he ran out of the house naked shouting, “Eureka! Eureka!
(= “I’ve found it!”).
The method to determine whether or not a crown was pure gold, discovered by Archimedes in his bathtub, was to compare its weight to its volume.
If one had one pound of gold and one pound of silver and submerged them in water, the silver would make the water rise higher than the gold, because it is less dense than gold, and therefore large in volume, displacing more water.
Archimedes compared the volume of water displaced by the suspected crown with that displaced by a pure gold crown of equal weight.
Archimedes did not “find” this truth by searching after it – although he might have spent days thinking about a solution to the problem. His “find” came as an unexpected surprise.
He had probably noticed the water in the bathtub rising hundreds of times before, but its significance didn’t “click” in his brain until that “Eureka” moment.
Today’s Gospel describes how John discovered JESUS as the Lamb of God and how Andrew, Simon, and Nathaniel discovered him as the “Promised Messiah” quite unexpectedly.
JESUS was their “Eureka.”
John the Baptist gave testimony to JESUS by pointing Him out as the Lamb of God.
Andrew called Him the Messiah, and
Nathaniel called JESUS Rabbi, Son of God, and King of Israel.
JESUS completed the epiphany declaring Himself the Son of Man.
Our Christian call is to live and die like the Lamb of God.
Our call is to rebuild broken lives.
Our call is to bear witness to the Lamb of God.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
January 8, 2012
All nations are invited to sing the Lord’s praises for they have been called to hear the good news and worship the long-awaited Messiah and King with the gift of their lives.
Artabam the fourth of the Magi
In 1895, Henry van Dyke wrote the “Story of the Other Wise Man,” fourth wise men see the baby Jesus.
But Artaban did make it in time to save one of the Holy Innocents by bribing a soldier.
For 33 years Artaban searched for Jesus. He did not find him. But all the while the Fourth wise man fed the hungry, helped the poor.
Then one day in Jerusalem Artaban saw the “King of the Jews” being crucified.
He started to offer as ransom. But then he saw a girl being sold into slavery to pay family debs. Artaban gave his pearl to buy freedom for the girl.
Suddenly the earth quake as Jesus died on the cross and a stone struck Artaban. Dying, he heard a voice saying: “When you helped the least of my children, you helped me. Meet me in heaven!”
Artaban, the fourth of the magi, had been making God present in his community for years by helping others. God asks each of us on the feast of Epiphany to be the fourth of the Magi by becoming God’s epiphanies, making His love present in the world around us by our acts of love and kindness.
The word Epiphany, which means appearance, manifestation or showing forth, marks Jesus’ first appearance to the Gentiles.
“Epiphany” refers to God’s Self-revelation as well as to the revelation of Jesus as His Son.
Epiphany is an older celebration than the feast of Christmas, having originated in the East in the late second century.
We have seen his star in the East, and have come with gifts to adore the Lord.

STEWARDSHIP
“You have set on his head a crown of pure gold.” (Psalm 21:4)
Traditionally, Epiphany celebrates three manifestations of God in Christ: to the Magi, at the baptism in the Jordan, and at Cana. The liturgies of this season often present the incarnation under the imagery of a marriage between divinity and humanity in Jesus Christ, the wise and just King, greater than Solomon.

THE OCTAVE DAY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD
MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
January 1, 2012
We seek GOD’s blessings as did MARY, Because of her SON; we can confidently call GOD, “ABBA”!
The beginning of a new year, God’s gift to humanity, prompts me to extend to all, with great confidence and affection, my heartfelt good wishes that this time now before us may be marked concretely by justice and peace.
With what attitude should we look to the New Year? We find a very beautiful image in Psalm 130. The Psalmist says that people of faith wait for the Lord “more than those who watch for the morning” (v.6); they wait for him with firm hope because they know that he will bring light, mercy, salvation.
This waiting was born of the experience of the Chosen People, who realized that God taught them to look at the world in its truth and not to be overwhelmed by tribulation. I invite you to look to 2012 with this attitude of confident trust.
It is true that the year now ending has been marked by a rising sense of frustration at the crisis looming over society, the world of labor and the economy, a crisis whose roots are primarily cultural and anthropological. It seems as if a shadow has fallen over our time, preventing us from clearly seeing the light of day.
In this shadow, however, human hearts continue to wait for the dawn of which the Psalmist speaks. Because this expectation is particularly powerful and evident in young people, my thoughts turn to them and to the contribution which they can and must make to society…..
All you men and women throughout the world, who take to heart the cause of peace: peace is not a blessing already attained, but rather a goal to which each and all of us must aspire. Let us look with greater hope to the future; let us encourage one another on our journey; let us work together to give our work a more humane and fraternal face; and let us feel a common responsibility towards present and future generations, especially in the task of training them to be people of peace and builders of peace. With these thoughts I offer my reflections and I appeal to everyone: let us pool our spiritual, moral and material resources for the great goal of “educating young people in justice and peace”.

BENEDICTUS PP. XVI
“Today a light will shine upon us, for the Lord is born for us; and he will be called Wondrous God, Prince of peace, and Father of future ages: and his reign will be without end.” (cf. Isaiah 9:1, 5)

THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD
CHRISTMAS
December 25, 2011
-“Verbum caro factum est”-
“The Word became flesh”
(John 1:14)
Dear brothers and sisters listening to me here in Rome and throughout the world, I joyfully proclaim the message of Christmas: God became man; he came to dwell among us. God is not distant: he is “Emmanuel,” God-with-us. He is no stranger: he has a face, the face of JESUS.
This message is ever new, ever surprising, for it surpasses even our most daring hope. First of all, because it is not merely a proclamation: it is an event, a happening, which credible witnesses saw, heard and touched in the person of JESUS of Nazareth! Being in his presence, observing his works and hearing his words, they recognized in Jesus the MESSIAH; and seeing him risen, after crucifixion, they were certain that he was true man and true God, the only-begotten SON come from the Father, full of grace and truth (cf. John 1:14).
“The Word became flesh.” Before this revelation we once more wonder: how can this be? The Word and the flesh are mutually opposed realities; how can the eternal and almighty Word become a frail and mortal man? There is only one answer: LOVE. Those who love desire to share with the beloved, they want to be one with the beloved, and Sacred Scripture shows us the great love story of God for his people which culminated in JESUS CHRIST.
God in fact does not change: he is faithful to himself. He who created the world is the same one who called Abraham and revealed his name to Moses: “I am who I am… the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob… a God merciful and gracious, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness (cf. Ex 3:14-15; 34:6). God does not change; he is LOVE, ever and always. The Incarnation is the culmination of creation.
“The Word became flesh.” The light of this truth is revealed to those who receive it in faith, for it is a mystery of love. Only those who are open to love are enveloped in the light of Christmas. So it was on that night in Bethlehem, and so it is today. The Incarnation of the Son of God is an event which occurred within history, while at the same time transcending history.
“The Word became flesh.” The proclamation of Christmas is also a light for all people, for the collective journey of humanity. “Emmanuel,” God-with-us, has come as King of justice and peace.
In this Christmas, I offer prayerful good wishes to you and your families, for a spiritually fruitful celebration of the Lord’s birth. Merry Christmas! -Pope Benedict XVI

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 18, 2011
From Heaven above to Earth He came
Long ago, a wise and good king ruled in Persia. He loved his people and wanted to know how they lived. He wanted to know about their hardships. So he dressed himself in the clothes of a peasant and went to the homes of the poor. No one whom he visited suspected that he was their king. One of them was a very poor man who lived in a cellar. The king ate his coarse food with him and cheered him up. Then he left. Later he visited the poor man again and disclosed his identity. The king thought the man would ask for some gift or favors, but he didn’t. Instead he said, “You left your palace and your glory to visit me in this dark, dreary place. You ate the course food I ate. You brought gladness to my heart! To others you may have given rich gifts. But to me you have given yourself!”
At Christmas we celebrate the king of king leaving his divine glory and coming to our dearly world to share with us our poverty, misery and pain. It is not a question of Jesus giving us any particular gift or blessings; it is a question of him giving us himself. This is the big difference between Jesus and Santa Claus. Santa Claus rides in an open sleigh giving gifts to children who have been good, so long as their houses have got chimneys. Santa leaves the gift on the Christmas tree and disappears. Christ, on the other hand, does not leave a gift and disappear. He comes to live with us. He comes to share our human condition. His very presence is the gift. And, as the poor man in our story knows, being with the king is far more satisfying than receiving a gift from him.
Today we find ourselves in the same position as the poor man being visited by his king. Like the poor man our hearts should be full of joy, not in the extra gift the king will give us but in the fact that the king has come to be with us, to become one of us. We can, therefore, gladly sing today already the Christmas song, “From heaven above to earth I come.”
Welcome to earth, Thou noble Guest, / through whom even wicked men are blest!
Thou coma’s to share our misery, / what can we render, Lord, to Thee!

The Drama of Salvation
In the gospel according to Luke 1:26-38 it is the story that reveals drama, not tragedy or farce, as the heart of our lives. As the angel delivers his message to Mary, it is a drama that unfolds; absolutely everything hands upon a free choice, a word, from a young girl. Heaven itself is silent and fixed upon her answer. Will she say yes or no? Her drama is ours. The event of the incarnation hangs today upon our frail freedom and heaven itself waits to hear us say, “Be it done!” so the Love may conquer.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 11, 2011
Rejoicing worshipers
There is a story told about a man from Louisville, Kentucky, who had to travel to St. Louis on business. This was years ago when Christians kept Sunday as a very special day.
For this man “keeping the Sabbath,” also meant not riding the trains on Sunday. Thus, after he finished up his business late Saturday night, he had to stay over in St. Louis until the following Monday morning.
On Sunday morning, he left the hotel looking for a place to worship. The streets were quite deserted, but finally he saw a policeman and asked him for the directions to the nearest church. The stranger thanked the policeman for the information and was about to walk off when he turned and asked the policeman: “Why have you recommended that particular church? It looks like a Catholic church. There must be several churches nearby that you could have recommended.”
The policeman smiled and replied: “I’m not a church man myself, but the people who come out of that church are the happiest looking church-people in St. Louis and they claim that they have received JESUS and they are they are happily taking him to their homes. I thought that would be the kind of church you would like to attend.”
The Scripture for today reminds us that every Sunday in every Christian church must be a “Gaudete Sunday” or “Rejoice Sunday.”
TODAY is “Gaudete Sunday” because today’s Mass (in its pre-Vatican II Latin form), began with the opening antiphon:
“Gaudete in Domino simper”
-Rejoice in the Lord always-
“…Say to all faint hearts, ‘Courage! Do not be afraid.”
(Isaiah 35:4)

The Tradition of the Christmas Crib
Following a beautiful and firmly-rooted tradition, many families set up their crib immediately after the feast of the Immaculate Conception, as if to relive with Mary those days full of trepidation that preceded the birth of Jesus. Putting up the crib at home can be a simple but effective way of presenting faith, to pass it on to one’s children. The crib helps us contemplate the mystery of God’s love that was revealed in the poverty and simplicity of the Bethlehem Grotto.
Saint Francis of Assisi was so taken by the mystery of the Incarnation that he wanted to present it anew at Grecio in the living nativity scene, thus beginning an old, popular tradition that still retains its value for evangelization today.
Pope Benedict XVI
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
December 4, 2011
Prepare the way
Culturally, Alexander the Great had spread the Greek language over most of the civilized world three centuries earlier. It was then established as the international language by which the gospel be communicated.
Governmentally, the Romans furnished a system of law which made it possible for the gospel to grow in relative stability.
Logistically, the system of Roman roads made travel by missionaries very possible.
Do you suppose that as Alexander was extending his empire, he had any idea that God was using him to prepare the way for the Babe of Bethlehem?
Do you suppose that as the Romans built the roads that made commerce possible over all the known should, that they were preparing the way for the King of Kings?
When Augustus Caesar sent out his decree that all the world should be taxed and that every person should be enrolled in his own city, do you suppose that he had any idea that he was engaged in bringing to pass an ancient prophecy that the Messiah should be born in Bethlehem?
By the time John cried out in the wilderness his prophetic, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,” God had already been at work for thousands of years bringing about just the right conditions for the birth of his Son. Then, in the fullness of time, Christ was born.
“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ” is not a book, but a presence: the presence of the Son of God in human flesh. The beginning of the Gospel promises a new beginning for those aching to hear someone “speak tenderly.” Comfort will come; truth that is meaning which never decays will “spring out of the earth” – out of what we see and touch every day. We hasten that day by awaiting this presence eagerly. “Repentance” means changing to please the one who loves us into happiness.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
November 27, 2011
“Jesus said to his disciples:
“Be watchful! Be alert!
You do not know the time will come.”
Mark 13:33-37
“But it’s steady work.”
Leo Rosten tells an amusing story that comes out of the Jewish tradition.
There was a man in a small Russian village who, because of a disabling condition, could not find employment. The community council wanted to help him but they also wanted to protect his pride. They decided to give him a job. They paid him two rubles a week to sit at the town’s entrance and be the first to greet the Messiah when he arrives.
“Just sit on the hill outside our village every day from dawn to sunset,” they tell him. “You will be our watchman for the approach of the Messiah. And when you see him, run back to the village as fast as you can, shouting, “The Messiah! The Messiah! He is coming!”
The man’s face lit up just thinking of the glory of his new position.
Every morning he greeted the dawn from the hill and not until sunset every day, did he leave his treasured post.
A year went by, and a traveler, approaching the village, noticed the figure sitting on a hill. “Shalom,” called the traveler. “What are you doing here?” “I am waiting for the Messiah!” The man replied. “It’s my job.” The traveler was somewhat amused. “How do you like this job?” he asked, suppressing a smile. “Frankly, it doesn’t pay much,” said the poor man, “but it’s steady work.”
(Leo Roster, the Joys of Yinglish. New York: McGraw Publishing Company, 1992)
That would be steady work if you did not believe that JESUS was the Messiah, twenty-eleven hundred years of waiting and watching for the coming of the Lord.

“Whatever you did for one of the least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
(Matthew 25:31-46)
Living community
In July 1995, the city of Chicago was wrapped in a deadly heat wave. For days the mercury hung in the three-digit-zone, the heat index reaching 120 degrees. During the heat wave, more than 700 Chicagoans died.
Emergency teams reported finding inadequate or nonexistent ventilation in the residences of the dead. Persons living with cardiac or pulmonary weaknesses were the most susceptible.
What major media accounts failed to report was another deadly killer: the absence of community. The majority of people who die in the heat wave died alone. They had no one checking in on their attic apartments or their windowless lives. No family, friends or neighbor showed up to discover the severity of his or her plight. Sixty-eight of these individuals died so anonymously that Cook County officials buried them in a mass grave.
The absence of community does not require a heat wave or cold spell, much less hundreds of deaths, to make its presence known. It surrounds us daily – in our neighborhoods, our work lives and the anguish of our own souls.
We may not always be aware of this void. But the scarcity of deep sense of community can wreak havoc below the surface of our outwardly busy lives, just as it occasionally makes the ultimate claim on an elderly individual living alone.
In today’s parable of the sheep and goats, Jesus calls us to the work of living community – community that is centered in the holiness of God that dwells within every man, woman, and child; community that sees deeper than the externals of race, nationality, culture and language in order to behold the love of God animating the lives of all who draw breath; community that images the compassion and mercy of God in its members’ care of one another.

November 13, 2011
Parable of the talents
“…For to everyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away…”
(Matthew 25: 14-30)
Chance-taking adventurous voyagers
Columbus trusted his maps and calculations, considered his risks and sailed west, discovering the “new world.”
Magellan based his charts and maps on the most information then available, and boldly circumnavigated the world.
A few centuries late, in their search for a North West Passage, Lewis and Clark struck out to cross the entire North American continent and explored the nation.
All these explorers had at least one thing in common. They all based their momentous journeys on maps that were mostly inaccurate, hopelessly flawed or vastly mistaken.
Yet each of these adventurers went ahead, accepted the risks, plunged into unknown territories and changed the world.
It is precisely because of their risk-taking that the map of the planet was re-drawn, and the dreams of future generations were reshaped.
Those without the vision, without the courage to take risks, are quick to label explorers as crazy, crackpots, fools and failures.
In the parable of the talents this week. Jesus gives us a stern warning – discipleship does not promise complete safety. On the contrary, true disciples are called to take risks and venture beyond the known and the secure.
This penultimate Sunday of the Liturgical year reminds us not only of the end of the liturgical year, but also of the end of all things and of the preparations we need to reach heaven.
The main theme of the three readings is an invitation to live in such a way that we make the best use of the talents God has given us, so that at that at the hour of our death Our Lord will say:
“Well done, my good and faithful servant! Come, and share the joy of your master.”

THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
November 6, 2011
“Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
(Matthew 25:1-13)
Our lectionary ends the Church’s liturgical year with texts about the coming of the Son of Man, which leads into the New Year’s Season of Advent –the Season of “Coming.”
Jesus’ future coming as the conquering Son of Man at the end of time and his past coming as the helpless infant in a manger are the topics of our remembrance.
This Sunday’s readings bring the familiar warnings about preparation for the end of our own world, the end of our own time and our passage to another world.
They tell us that a searching, watching and evolving heart us essential for a lively, dynamic faith in God. They ask us whether we are ready for these events and how we are preparing for them.
“Eight Steps Toward a More Satisfying life”
In a recent Time magazine sidebar, there appeared, “Eight Steps Toward a More Satisfying Life.” Here are the Eight Steps (Time, 17 January 2005, A8-A9). 1. Count your blessings; 2. Practice acts of kindness; 3. Savor life’s joys; 4. Thank a mentor; 5. Learn to forgive; 6. Invest time and energy in friends and family; 7. Take care of your body; 8. Develop strategies for coping with stress and hardship.
This morning when we reflect on the parable of the ten virgins, we add one more step, a 9th Step to the strategy. Be prepared. Be prepared to step off life’s planned paths, and trust the Spirit. After all, the Spirit can appear in many guises, disguises, and surprises.

When Bishop Philip Brooks, author of “O, Little Town of Bethlehem,” was seriously ill, he requested that none of his friends come to see him. But when an acquaintance of his named Robert Ingersoll, the famous anti-Christian propagandist, came to see him he allowed him to enter his room. Ingersoll said, “I appreciate this very much, especially when you aren’t letting any of your close friends see you.” Bishop Brooks responded, “Oh, I’m confident of seeing them in the next world, but this may be my last chance to see you.”

Communion with the Dead
In full consciousness of this communion of the whole Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the Church in its pilgrim members, from the very earliest days of the Christian religion, has honored with great respect the memory of the dead; and because it is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins’ she offers her suffrages for them. Our prayer for them is capable not only of helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective.
THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 30, 2011
“Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example…”
(Matthew 23:1-12)
Elephantine massage therapy
The story has been told of a lion that was very proud. He decided to take a walk one day to demonstrate his mastery over the other creatures.
He strutted his way through the forest until he came across a bear, WHO IS THE KING OF THE JUNGLE, BEAR? ‘Why of course you are, mighty lion.’
He went on until he found the tiger, WHO IS THE KING OF THE JUNGLE TIGER? ‘Why you are, great lion.’
Next the lion found the elephant, WHO IS THE KING OF THE JUNGLE, ELEPHANT? The elephant instantly grabbed the lion with his trunk and spun him around a few times and slammed him to the ground. He then stepped on him a few times and picked him up and dunked him in the water and then threw him up against a tree.
The lion staggered to his feet and said, ‘LOOK, JUST BECAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GET SO UPSET’ the lion was the one who wasn’t getting it. He was missing the truth, just as were many of the scribes and Pharisees and Jewish priest, to whom JESUS gives an elephantine shock treatment in today’s gospel.
The central theme of today’s readings is a strong invitation and challenges to render humble, selfless, diligent, committed and loving service to other in the community without expecting honor or rewards.
You have but one Father in heaven and one master, the Christ!

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 23, 2011
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind… You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
(Matthew 22: 34-40)
Love them anyway
In Calcutta, India, there is a children’s home named “Shishu Bhavan” (Children’s Home), founded by Mother Teresa. The home continues to be operated by her community, the Missionaries of Charity. On the wall of the home hangs a sign which reads:
People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered, LOVE THEM ANYWAY.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives, DO GOOD ANYWAY.
If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies, SUCCEED ANYWAY.
The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow, DO GOOD ANYWAY.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable, BE HONEST AND FRANK ANYWAY.
What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight, BUILD ANYWAY.
People really need help but may attack you if you help them, HELP PEOPLE ANYWAY.
Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth, GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU’VE GOT ANYWAY.
Mother Teresa counsels her young charges that the challenges offered by this sign can be met only if human beings are motivated by a love and a respect for one another which looks beyond faults, differences, ulterior motives, success and failure. Mother Teresa once said of herself, “By blood and origin, I am all Albanian. My citizenship is Indian, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the whole world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the heart of Jesus.”
(A Simple Path, Ballantine Books, New York: 1995)
It is this relationship of belonging and the loving service which grows out of that belonging which the scriptural authors called covenant.

For the poor, the sick, the elderly, the grieving, the lonely, the homeless, the hungry, and the unemployed: that the Lord will be close to them in his mercy.
TWENTIETH-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 16, 2011
On tribute to Caesar
“Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said. And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians… And Jesus said, ‘Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.”
(Matthew 22: 15-21)
Caesar and God
In his Inaugural Address on January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy, the newly elected president of the United States, made the famous statement, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man. Finally, whether you are citizens of America on citizens of the world ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking God’s blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”
If we personalized Kennedy’s statement it would read, “Don’t ask, ‘What can my country do for me?’ Instead ask, ‘What can I do for my country?’ And add, “Don’t ask, ‘What can God do for me?’ Instead ask, “What can I do for God?”
Today’s Gospel lesson gives the correct answer.
“The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many.”

TWENTIETH-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 9, 2011
Parable of the wedding feast
A parable with allegorical features; in this, as in the lesson it teaches, it resembles the one that precedes it. The king is God; the wedding feast it the happiness of the messianic age and the king’s son the Messiah; those sent with invitations are the prophets and the apostles; the invited who ignore them or do them violence are the Jews; those called in from the street are the sinners and the pagans; the burning of the city is the destructions of Jerusalem.
At v.11 the scene changes to that of
The Last Judgment.
(Matthew 22: 1-14)
“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son’s wedding…”
Sunday Mass with helium balloons
At a Church conference in Omaha, people were given helium-filled balloons and told to release them at some point in the service when they felt joy in their hearts.
All through the service worshipers kept releasing balloons.
At the end of the service it was discovered that most of them still had their balloons unreleased.
If this experiment were repeated in our church today, how many of us would still have our balloons unreleased at the end of the service?
Many of us think of God’s house as a place for seriousness, a place to close one’s eyes and pray, but not a place of celebration, a place where we can have fun.
The parable of the Great Supper in today’s gospel paints a different picture.
The Christian assembly is a gathering of those who are called to the Lord’s party.
In the Eucharist we say of ourselves, “Happy are those who are called to his supper.”
The Lord invites us to a supper, a banquet, a feast.
Can you imagine a wedding feast in which everyone sits stone faced; cold and quiet?

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 2, 2011
“Did you never read in the Scriptures:
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes?”
(Matthew 21:42)
The rejected corner stone:
There was a legend that was well known in New Testament times that in the building of God’s Temple by Solomon most of the stones were of the same size and shape.
One stone arrived, however, that was different from the others. The builders took one look at it and said, “This will not do,” and sent it rolling down into the valley of Kedron below.
The years passed and the great Temple was nearing completion, and the builders sent a message to the stonecutters to send the chief cornerstone that the structure might be complete. The cutters replied that they had sent the stone years before. They realized that they had thrown away the cornerstone. They hurried into the valley to retrieve it.
Finally, from under vines and debris, they recovered it and with great effort rolled it up the hill and put it in place so that the great Temple would be complete.
The stone that had been rejected had become the chief cornerstone.
Jesus, who had been rejected now, reigns at the right hand of the Father.
From rejection to rejoicing.
O Lord, you have given everything its place in the world, and no one can make it otherwise.
For it is your creation, the heavens and the earth and the stars: you are the Lord of all.

Your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days. (James 5:3)
Apparently we human beings have long been tempted to imagine that wealth will buy us all we want, even some form of immortality. In fact, the only wealth that buys life everlasting is the saving love of Jesus Christ, which we receive with gratitude today in the Eucharist.

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 18, 2011
“Jesus told his disciples this parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard…”
(Matthew 20: 1-16a)
No more sermons on smoking, drinking and gambling:
A young priest with a lot of zeal began his pastoral life as the associate pastoral a parish in the hills of Kentucky.
On the first Sunday, he preached on the evils of smoking. After Mass, some of the parish leaders met him at the door: “We’re a little surprised that you would deal with the subject of smoking because nearly half of the state of Kentucky raises tobacco. You might want to think twice about talking about tobacco in our church.” The priest thanked them for enlightening him.
The next Sunday he came back and preached with additional fervor against liquor and its evils. The same group met him at the door after the Holy Mass. They said: “We think we need to tell you that you ought to be careful about preaching against alcoholic beverages, especially since nearly a third of our county distills whiskey.” “I didn’t know that,” the preacher replied. “Thank you for helping me.”
The next Sunday he preached a stirring sermon on gambling, especially on horse races. The same group met him after the Mass: “We think we need to tell you that over half of our county raises thoroughbred racehorses, so you want to be real careful about talking about gambling from the pulpit.”
Being a quick learner, the next Sunday, based on the gospel text of Peter’s attempt to walk on water, the young priest preached against the evils of scuba diving in international waters!
Obviously this young preacher took the easy way out by compromising with evil.
But this not what we, as Christians, are called to do, as Jesus demonstrates in the parable of the workers in the vineyard in today’s gospel. He tells the Jews that, although they are the first-comers in God’s vineyard as God’s chosen race, the late comers, like his Gentile disciples, are going to inherit the same kingdom of God, which they had thought was “reserved” for them. The result of this parable was to turn their lives upside down. Ultimately, this is why Jesus was crucified…because he said things that made people uncomfortable about compromising with evil.
Today’s readings are all about the sense of justice and the extravagant grace of a merciful God. God rewards us, not in the measure of what we do, but according to His good will…
I am the Savior of all people, says the Lord. Whatever their troubles, I will answer their cry, and I will always be their Lord.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 11, 2011
The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
“Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents…”
(Matthew 18: 21-35)
UN forgiven sins according to Dostoevsky and Shakespeare
Dostoevsky’s novel, Crime and Punishment deals with unforgiving sin.
The novel is little more than the tale of a young, Fascist, poor student who murders a rich, old lady so he can get her money and continue his studies. But the student, hounded by guilt, pursued by his sins, finally confesses his crimes and is punished.
Eloquently, so eloquently, Dostoevsky shows us what the real world is really like, a world where the real sin comes due like all debts and must be paid in full as the creditor comes calling us to account.
The same is true of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth.
A man is killed so Macbeth can usurp the crown, and Lady Macbeth, tormented by her part in the murderous sin, is driven to insanity. She pitifully raises her hands imagining them still to be stained with blood, and frets, “Will these hands ne’er be clean?”
Can’t we identify with Dostoevsky’s and Shakespeare’s characters?
We are sinners as they were.
Some of us owe a lot.
Some are sin-indebted a little.
But each of us, like the debtors in the gospel text, must settle accounts with king.
God Almighty himself.
Forgiveness is Available.
“The LORD is kind and merciful; slow to anger, and rich in compassion.”

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 4, 2011
Mathew 18: 15-20
“I must forgive”: Sister Helen Prejean, in her book Dead Man Walking, tells the real story of Lloyd Leblanc, a Roman Catholic layman, whose son was murdered. When he arrived in the cane field with the sheriff’s deputies to identify his son David’s body, LeBlanc immediately knelt by his boy’s body and prayed the Lord’s Prayer. When he came to the words: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us,” he realized the depth of the commitment he was making. “Whoever did this, I must forgive them, I resolved,” he later told Sister Prejean LeBlanc confessed that it had been difficult not to be overcome by the bitterness and feelings of revenge that welled up from time to time, especially on David’s birthday. But for the rest of his life, forgiveness was prayed for and struggled for and won. He went to the execution of the culprit Patrick Sonnier, not for revenge but hoping for an apology. Before sitting in the electric chair Patrick Sonnier, the murderer said, “Mr. LeBlanc, I want to ask your forgiveness for what I did,” and Lloyd LeBlanc nodded his head, signaling forgiveness he had already given. Today’s gospel reminds us and challenges us to continue on the path to forgiveness and reconciliation.
The common theme of today’s reading is the impact of our membership in the Church on our “private” lives. Being a member of the Church means we belong to a community of brothers and sisters in Christ. We are, therefore the “keepers” of our brothers and sisters, for each one of us is important to all others in our faith community. That is why we have to be meaningfully present to, and take responsibility for, other people. Inhuman behavior against defenseless people, like child abuse, elder abuse or spouse abuse, is something about which we need to be really concerned, to the point of taking appropriate action to protect the victims. This individual responsibility in a Christian society includes, as today’s readings remind us, our responsibility for each other. Perhaps the most painful obligations of watchful love are fraternal correction and generosity in forgiving and forgetting injuries.
GOD WAS RECONCILING THE WORLD TO HIMSELF IN CHRIST AND ENTRUSTING TO US THE MESSAGE OF RECONCILIATION.

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 14, 2011
“A Canaanite woman came out and started shouting, ‘Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.”
Matthew 15:21-28
Baggage check
A woman, a divorcee, was explaining to her daughter why she never remarried. “The men I know will bring too much heavy baggage to the marriage and I simply don’t want to put up with it.”
The daughter listened sympathetically to her mother’s explanation. Then she took her mother’s hand in hers and said as lovingly as she could, “But, Mom, you’re not exactly carry-on yourself.”
Yes, indeed, we do have high standards – for other people.
We are quick to assess people purely by our own measure of what is right and good; we determine their worth by their function or their usefulness in helping us accomplish our own goals and agendas; we quickly size up people by our own inaccurate and sometimes bigoted stereotypes; we become so obsessed with numbers and demographics that we forget that we are dealing with flesh-and-blood human beings with hopes and beliefs and feelings.
In honoring the goodness and love of the Canaanite mother for her sick child – who, as a Canaanite, represented one of Israel’s most despised enemies – Christ illuminates our vision, enabling us to see one another as God sees us.
The call to discipleship demands that we look beyond labels and stereotypes to realize that every one of us is a child of God, brothers and sisters all.

ROMAN MISSAL
Why a New Translation
“Why should there be a translation at all?” some of the faithful may wonder. Well, the new Order of Mass – not the so-called “Latin Mass,” more properly named the Tridentine Rite Mass, which was said in all countries before the Second Vatican Council recommended the use of the vernacular and revised the structure and the language of the Mass – is written in Latin, as are all the prayers used at Mass is said. These texts must be translated, then, from the original Latin into English and all the other vernacular languages of the world. Thus, when the priest says, “The Lord be with you,” the response in the vernacular languages has simply translated the Latin “Et cum spiritu tuo,” “And with your spirit,” so that in Sweden the response is just that, “Och med din ande,” as it is in German, “Und mit deinem Geist,” as it is in Italian, “E con il tuo spirit.” The new translation in English, then, is meant to bring our prayers closer not only to the original Latin, bet to what our brothers and sisters throughout the world have long been saying in their languages.

In his compassion the Lord answers all our needs: “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs,” (Psalm 145:8)thus renewing his covenant of love with us: “Thus says the Lord: All you who are thirsty. Come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; come, without cost, drink wine and milk!”
(Isaiah 55:1, 2)
Nothing can ever separate us from the love of Christ: “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?”

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 17th, 2011
Universality and Catholicity
The word “catholic” occurs for the first time as a description of the Church in the letter of Saint Ignatius of Antioch to the Smyrneans, hence, at the beginning of the second century: “Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church”. The local Church gathers under the supervision of the bishop; wherever he is, there is Church. The “bishop” of the universal Church is Jesus Christ: wherever Christ is, there is the Church, the Catholic Church. Ignatius seems to assume that his readers are already familiar with the word “catholic” as a description for the universal Church, which in all the local Churches is still only one. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that in Antioch the word “Christian” was first coined for the disciples of Jesus Christ (Acts 11:26). From the matter-of-course use of the title “Catholic” by the martyr-bishop of this city, one could conclude that perhaps this word, also, was first developed there as an expression for the universal Church.
Although the text offer no further explanation of the word “catholic”, two conceptual elements are clearly discernible; in them are immediately apparent the essential traits that have been viewed throughout subsequent history also as the authentic meaning of catholicity. These two elements are membership in Christ and universality. The two go together. Only Christ can hold together and unify the whole; when we speak of Christ, we must, of course, always see the Trinitarian mystery in the background; he comes from the Father, and he works at present in all of history through the Holy Spirit, who bears witness to Christ and guides believers into all the truth (John 15:26; 16:13). Universality is God’s concern; Christ holds it all together, because he is the Son. The Christocentric emphasis is, as such, always a Trinitarian emphasis. The reference to Christ, then, contains the Church’s claim to extend to the “ends of the earth” and to hand the people over to the true king of the world as an inheritance (Psalm 2:8; Mat 28:19; Acts 1:8).

“The Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groaning.”
In Today’s second reading, Saint Paul bids us to take comfort in knowing that when God invites us to pray to him, he knows our true needs, even if we do not. The Holy Spirit intercedes and prays for us even if we can’t come up with appropriate words; even when we don’t have a clue what to ask for.
We are not left alone.
Good stewards know that prayer is an important part of living a life in Christ. The important thing is to make space for God. Do we let God into our hearts? Do we make room for the Holy Spirit to pray within us?

The Roman Missal, Third Edition
“And with your spirit”
The first change concerns the response to the priest’s greeting “The Lord be with you.” The faithful will begin to respond
“And with your spirit”
Instead of the now customary “And also with you.” “The Lord (be) with you” (Dominus vobiscum) is a powerful biblical greeting, used in both Old and New Testaments, such as an angel or an apostle, meet someone to whom he was sent. Most famously, these are the words with which the angel greets Mary (Luke 1:28).
The word “spirit” refers to pneuma, a key term in the Greek New Testament. Its meaning ranges from the person of the Holy Spirit, to his manifold gifts within us, to the highest part of our own souls. Our “spirit” is like our inner “radio antenna,” the very “top” of our selves, through which the Holy Spirit enters us so that our Spirit-filled spirit may in turn transform our souls and our bodies.
Thus when we return the priest’s greeting by saying “And with your spirit,” we state that the Lord is present to his spirit, and we also wish that the Lord is present to his spirit, and we also wish that the Lord may be even more intensely present in him so as to rekindle in him the spirit of courage, love, and self-control, the chief virtues of the minister according to Paul (2 Tm 1:7). The greeting, then, is an acknowledgement of the Lord Jesus’ presence in the congregation and the minister, and a wish that his presence may fill us with his Spirit and transform us unto his image and likeness.

The Parable of the Sower
“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil…”

The 2001 Vatican document Liturgiam Authenticam (“On the Use of Vernacular Languages in the Publication of the Books of the Roman Liturgy”) outlined new rules and principles versions of the Roman Missal match the original Latin texts more closely (or literally). Since then the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has been working and approve the new English translation of the Roman Missal (Sacramentary).
The new translations affect the Order of Mass, including both the presider’s and people’s parts (responses).
Lectionaries reading, including responsorial psalms, are not affected at this time.
“The changes can be an occasion for a reawakening of the liturgical life of the Church, a new beginning.”

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 3, 2011
The people of Jesus’ “native place” begin to measure him based on their own inadequate preconceptions and presuppositions. Because they are “sated with contempt,” they rule out the possibility of experiencing the “mighty deeds” of the Lord.
How much better are those who, like Saint Paul, approach reality from the perspective of the thorn in their flesh, even boasting gladly of their weakness.
For “power is made perfect in weakness.” The embrace of our weakness quells the rebellion of original sin and opens us to the wonder of the Prophet among us.
God’s grace is sufficient for us.
“I will boast in my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”
2 Corinthians 12: 8
“A prophet is not without honor except in his native place.”
Mark 6:5

THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
June 26, 2011
“Corpus Christi”
The Mass of all ages
As early as the second century we have the witness of St. Justin Martyr for the basic lines of the order of the Eucharistic celebration… St Justin wrote to the pagan emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161) around the year 155, explaining what Christians did:
On the day we call the day of the sun, all who dwell in the city or country gather in the same place.
The memoirs of the apostles and the weiting of the prophets are read, as much as time permits.
When the reader has finished, he who presides over those gathered admonishes and challenges them to imitate these beautiful things.
Then we all rise together and offer prayers for ourselves… and for all others, wherever they may be, so that we may be found righteous by our life and actions, and faithful to the commandments, so as to obtain eternal salvation.
When the prayers are concluded we exchange the kiss.
Then someone brings bread and a cup of water and wine mixed together to him who presides over the brethren.
He takes them and offers praise and glory to the Father of the universe, through the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and for a considerable time he gives thanks (in Greek: eucharistian) that we have been judged worthy of these gifts.
When he has concluded the prayers and thanksgivings, all present give voice to an acclamation by saying” ‘Amen.’
When he who presides has given thanks and the people have responded, those whom we call deacon give to those present the “eucharisted” bread, wine and water and take them to those who are absent.”

June 29 Peter and Paul, Apostles
St. Peter, the Rock. First Bishop of Rome
Very little is known about the early life of Peter, except that he was a Galilean fisherman, probably born in the village of Bethsaida or Capernaum and that his original name was Simon.
At the start of Christ’s ministry, He was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, when He called to Peter and his brother Andrew, “Come, and I will make you fishers of men.” They dropped their nets and followed Him.
The story of St. Peter is truly the story of the human family. It’s about failing and trying again; about faith overcoming fear; and about knowing that being a leader doesn’t require perfection.
Christ, we can conquer our fears and become leaders, too.
Next time a friend, colleague or family member disappoints you with a lack support, try forgiveness before anger.
When you know you’ve made a mistake, reflect on why you made the choices you did—was it fear, lack of understanding, laziness—and resolve to do better next time.

The Profession of the Christian Faith
The Creeds
Whoever says “I believe” says “I pledge myself to what we believe.” Communion in faith needs a common language of faith, normative for all uniting all in the same confession of faith.
From the beginning, the apostolic Church expressed and handed on her faith in brief formulae for all. But already early on, the Church also wanted to gather the essential elements of its faith into organic and articulated summaries intended especially for candidates for Baptism:
This synthesis of faith was not made to accord with human opinions, but rather what was of the greatest importance was gathered from all the Scriptures, to present the one teaching of faith in its entirety. And just as the mustard seed contains a great number of branches in a tiny grain, so too this summary of faith encompassed in a few words the whole knowledge of the true religion contained in the Old and New Testaments.
(St. Cyril of Jerusalem)
Such synthesis are called “professions of faith” since they summarize the faith that Christians profess. They are called “creeds” on account of what is usually their fist word in Latin: credo (“I believe”). They are also called “symbols of faith.”
The fist “profession of faith” is made during Baptism. The symbol of faith is first and foremost the baptismal creed. Since Baptism is given “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19), the truths of faith professed during Baptism are articulated in terms of their reference to the three persons of the Holy Spirit.
Through the centuries many professions or symbols of faith have been articulated in response to the needs of the different eras: the creeds of the different apostolic and ancient Churches, e.g., the Quicumque, also called the Athanasian Creed; the professions of faith of certain Councils, such as Toledo, Lateran, Lyons, Trent, or the symbols of certain popes, e.g., the Fides Damasi of the Credo of the People of God of Paul VI (1968).
Among all the creeds, two occupy a special place in the Church’s life.
The Apostles’ Creed is so called because it is rightly considered to be a faithful summary of the apostles’ faith…
The Niceno-Constantinolitan or Nicene Creed draws its great authority from the fact that it stems from the first two ecumenical Councils (in 325 and 381). It remains common to all the great Churches of both East and West to this day.
This Creed is the spiritual seal, our hearts’ meditation and en ever-present guardian; it is, unquestionably, the treasure of our soul.

PENTECOST SUNDAY
May 31, 2009
The sending of the Holy Spirit
When the Lord told his disciples to go and teach all nations and to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, he conferred on them the power of giving men new life in God.
He had promised through the prophets that in these last days he would pour out his Spirit on his servants and handmaids, and that they would prophesy. So when the Son of God became the Son of Man, the Spirit also descended upon him, becoming accustomed in this way to dwelling with the human race, to living in men and to inhabiting God’s creation. The Spirit accomplished the Father’s will in men who had grown old in sin, and gave them new life in Christ.
Luke says that the Spirit came down on the disciples at Pentecost, after the Lord’s ascension, with power to open the gates of life to all nations and to make know to them the new covenant. So it was that men of every language joined in singing one song of praise to God, and scattered tribes, restored to unity by the Spirit, were offered to the Father as the first fruits of all the nations.
This was why the Lord had promised to send the Advocate: he was to prepare us as an offering to God.
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of God came down upon the Lord, and the Lord in turn gave this Spirit to his Church, sending the Advocate from heaven into all the world into which, according to his own words, the devil too been cast down like lightning.
(Saint Irenaeus, bishop)
Spirit, come, in peace descending as at Jordan, heavenly Dove, Seal your Church as God’s anointed set our hearts on fire with love.
Stay among us, God the Father, Stay among us, God the Son, Stay among us, Holy Spirit: Dwell within us, make us one.

RENEW, O LORD, THE FACE OF THE EARTH!
THE ASCENSION
OF THE LORD
June 5, 2011
No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven
Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.
Christ is now exalted above the heavens, but he still suffers on earth all the pain that we, the members of his body, has to bear. He showed this when he cried out from above: Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? And when he said: I was hungry and you gave me food.
Why do we on earth not strive to find rest with him in heaven even now, through the faith, hope and love that unite us to him? While in heaven he is also with us; and we while on earth are with him. He is here with us by his divinity, his power and his love. We cannot be in heaven, as he is on earth, by divinity, but in him, we can be there by love.
He did not leave heaven when he came down to us; nor did he withdraw from us when he went up again into heaven. The fact that he was in heaven even while he was on earth is borne out by his own statement: No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.
Out of compassion for us he descended from heaven, and although he ascended alone, we also ascend, because we are in him by grace. Thus, no one but Christ descended and no one but Christ ascended; not because there is no distinction between the head and the body, but because the body as a unity cannot be separated from the head.

Precious Waiting
Life is…a short moment of waiting. But life is not empty waiting. It is to wait full of expectation. The knowledge that God will indeed fulfill the promise to renew everything, and will offer us a “new heaven and a new earth,” makes the waiting exciting…
This “little while” is a precious time. It is a time of purification and sanctification, a time to be prepared for the great passage to the permanent house of God.
What is my task during my “little while”?
I want to point to the signs of the Kingdom to come, to speak about the first rays of the day of God, to witness to the many manifestation of the Holy Spirit among us.
Prayer
Eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, through I am here for “a little while,” keep me ever aware that my earthly weeping and mourning will be replaced by rejoicing when I see you in your heavenly glory. Amen.

FOR PEACE
As the fever of day calms towards twilight
May all that is strained in us come to ease.
We pray for all who suffered violence today,
May an unexpected serenity surprise them.
For those who risk their lives each day for peace, may their hearts glimpse providence at the heart of history.
That those who makes riches from violence and war; might heart in their dreams the cries of the lost.
That we might see through our fear of each other; a new vision to heal our fatal attraction to aggression.
That those who enjoy the privilege of peace
Might not forget their tormented brothers and sisters.
That the wolf might lie down with the lamb, that our swords be beaten into ploughshares.
And no hurt pr harm be done anywhere along the holy mountain.
(Benedictus A Book of Blessings by John O’Donohue)

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 22, 2011
Eucharist—Communion—Solidarity
Christ Present and Active in the Blessed Sacrament
The second word Communion has by now become quite a fashionable word. It is, in fact, one of the most profound and essential words of Christian tradition, but for this very reason it is extremely important to understand it in all its profundity and breadth.
The word “koinonia” –in Latin, communion- occurred to me as the fundamental concept that expresses the very essence of the Church.
To clarify the central meaning of the term communion, I would like to refer briefly to two great communion passages in the New Testament. The first is found in 1 Corinthians 10:16, where Paul tells us: “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.”
The concept of communion is anchored first and foremost in the most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist, which is why, in the language of the Church, we still describe the reception of this sacrament today, and rightly so, simply as “going to communion;” or “fist communion.”
Here we are told that through this sacrament we enter, as it were, into a blood relationship with Jesus Christ, whereby blood, according to the Hebrew way of thinking, stands for “life”. Thus the passage declares an interpenetration of Christ’s life with ours.
Of course, “blood” in connection with the Eucharist also stands for self-giving, for a life that pours itself out, so to speak, gives itself away for us and to us.
Our existence is energized in such a way that life itself should become a “being for others”, as we can see right before our eyes in the pierced heart of Christ.
In many respects the words about bread are even more striking. Bread stands for a bodily communion with Christ…; Paul illuminates this form another perspective when he says that it is one and the same bread that we all receive in the sacraments. This is quite literally true: The “bread” –the new manna that God gives to us- is one and the same Christ for all. It is truly the one Lord himself who we receive in the Eucharist, or better: the Lord who receives us and makes us part of him.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 15, 2011
First Eucharist
Eucharist – Communion – Solidarity
In the early Church, the Eucharist was often called agape, “love”, or simply pax, “peace”.
The Christians of that time thus expressed in a remarkable way the inseparable connection between the mysterium of the hidden presence of the Lord and the praxis of serving the cause of peace, of Christians being peace.
“Eucharist” is today –and righty so- the most common name for the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, which the Lord instituted on the night before his Passion.
Eucharist is the translation of berakha and therefore means praise as well as thanksgiving and blessing. The berekha was the essential and central element of the Last Supper of Jesus; the Eucharistic Prayer, then, which incorporates this centerpiece, is derived immediately from the prayer of Jesus on the eve of his suffering and is the heart of the new spiritual sacrifice. That is why some of the Church Fathers described the Eucharist simply as “prayer”, as the “sacrifice” of praise, as a spiritual sacrifice, which, however, also becomes material and transforms matter: bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, the new food that nourishes us until the resurrection, for eternal life.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
May 1, 2011
A new creation in Christ
I speak to you who have just been reborn in baptism, my little children in Christ, you who are the new offspring of the Church, gift of the Father, and proof of Mother Church’s fruitfulness.
All of you who stand fast in the Lord are a holy seed, a new colony of bees, and the very flower of our ministry and fruit of our toil, my joy and my crown. It is the words of the Apostle that I address to you: Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh and its desires, so that you may be clothed with the life of him whom you have put on in this sacrament.
Such is the power of this sacrament: it is a sacrament of new life which begins here and now with the forgiveness of all past sins, and will be brought to completion in the resurrection of the dead. You have been buried with Christ by baptism into death in order that, as Christ has risen from the dead, you also may walk in newness of life.
You are walking now by faith, still on pilgrimage in a mortal body away from the Lord; but he to whom your steps are directed is himself the sure and certain way for you: Jesus Christ, who for our sake became man.
(From a sermon by Saint Augustine, bishop)
“You have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Seek the things that are above and not the things of earth, alleluia.”

EASTER SUNDAY
THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
April 24, 2011
The Easter praise of Christ
We should understand, beloved, that the paschal mystery is at once old and new, transitory and eternal, corruptible and incorruptible, mortal and immortal. In terms of the Law it is old; in terms of the Word it is new. In its figure it is passing, in its grace it is eternal. It is corruptible in the sacrifice the lamb, incorruptible in the eternal life of the Lord. It is mortal in his burial in the earth, immortal in his resurrection from the dead.
He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, yet he was not a sheep. He was silent as a lamb, yet he was not a lamb. The type has passed away; the reality has come. The lamb gives place to God, the sheep gives place to a man, and the man is Christ, who fills the whole of creation.
The Lord, though he was God, became man. He suffered for the sake of those who suffer, he was bound for those in bonds, condemned for the guilty, buried for those who lie in the grave; but he rose from the dead.
Come, then, all you nations of men and women, receive forgiveness for the sins that defile you. I am your forgiveness; I am the Passover that brings salvation. I am the lamb who was immolated for you. I am your ransom, your life, your resurrection, your light; I am your salvation and your king. I will bring you to the heights of heaven. With my own right hand I will raise you up, and I will show you the eternal Father.
Melito of Sardis, bishop
Praise be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ; in his great mercy he has given us new life in hope by raising Jesus Christ from the dead, alleluia!

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION
April 17, 2011
Hosanna to the Son of David!
O blest is he, O blest is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
The Messiah enters Jerusalem
“When they were near Jerusalem and had come in sight of Bethpage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go to the village facing you, and you will immediately find a tethered donkey and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, The Master needs them and will send them back directly.”
(Matthew 21: 1-4)
To what town has Jesus come? Why?
Jesus comes on a donkey and not on a stallion. What kind of messiah does that portray?
What kind of kingdom and king were the people expecting? How do their wishes compare with the reality of Jesus?
How might that discrepancy account for the same crowd shouting later on, “Crucify him!”?

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
April 10, 2011
The Valley of Dry Bones
“The Lord God says this: I am now going to open your graves; I mean to raise you from your graves, my people, and led you back to the soil of Israel. And you will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and raise you from your graves, my people.”
(Ezekiel 37:12-13)
Has God raised you from “the dead”?
When and how did it happen?
Are you “filled with the spirit”?
What does this mean? How does it happen?
From the depths
“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.”
(Psalm 130: 1-2)
Penitential psalm, but still more a psalm of hope; it takes a prominent place in the Christian liturgy for the dead, not as a lament but as an expression of trust in God the Redeemer.
Why do you think this psalm is a standard for Christian funerals?
Has sin ever cut a rift between you and God?
Was closeness restored?
Life through the Spirit
“Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.”
(Romans 8: 8, 11)
Give an example from your life of being dependent on the Spirit as you worked to “put to death” an area of sin.
The death of Lazarus
“…Jesus went on to tell them, ‘Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.’ His disciples replied, ‘Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.’ Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
So them he told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
(John 11: 11-14)
Why do you think Jesus told his disciples that Lazarus was sleeping at first when he knew that Lazarus was dead?
On the fifth Sunday, when the resurrection of Lazarus is proclaimed, we are faced with the ultimate mystery of our existence: “I am the resurrection and the life… Do you believe this?
For the Christian community, it is the moment to place with sincerity - together with Martha – all of our hopes in Jesus of Nazareth: “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world.”

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
April 3, 2011
David is anointed
“The Lord said to Samuel, Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen myself a king among his sons… Jesse presented his seven sons to Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, the Lord has not chosen these.
He then asked Jesse, ‘Are these all the sons you have?’ He answered, ‘There is still one left, the youngest; he is out looking after the sheep…’ At this, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him where he stood with his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord seized on David.”
(1 Samuel 16:1, 7, 10, 13)
The episode appears to derive from the prophetic tradition and remains unrelated to the subsequent history in which David is anointed at Hebron by the men of Judah, and them by the elders of Israel.
As one of David’s family, how would you have felt, being passed over in favor of David? When else has God ignored tradition in choosing one with a heart for God to fulfill his covenant?
The Good Shepherd
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
(Psalm 23: 5)
This psalm the care of God for the righteous, illustrated by two images: the shepherd, and the host of messianic banquet.
The psalm is traditionally applied to the sacramental life, particularly to baptism and the Eucharist.
Who are your “enemies” today?
What would like your cup to overflow with?
Living as Children of Light
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light; for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth and find out what please the Lord.”
(Ephesians 5: 8-9)
As Jesus cures the blind man, so too are we brought from darkness into light through the grace of baptism.
The cure of the man born blind
“… Jesus heard that the Pharisees had driven him away, and when he found him he said to him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ ‘Sir’, the man replied ‘tell me who he is so that I may believe in him.’ Jesus said, ‘You are looking at him; he is speaking to you’. Then man said, ‘Lord, I believe’, and worshipped him.”
(John 9: 1-41)
Why does Jesus wait until now to fully present himself? How is the man, only now, able to affirm Jesus as Lord?
“The miracle of this healing is a sign that Christ wants not only to give us sight, but also open our interior vision, so that our faith may become ever deeper and we may recognize him as our only Savior.”

The water from the rock
“…The people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. They said, ‘Why did you bring us out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?’ Then Moses cried out to the Lord, ‘What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
(Exodus 17: 3-7)
Why do you think God waited until the people complained before causing water to come out of the rock?
Was thirst the only problem?
Who or what usually gets the brunt of you frustration? Why?
How could this passage help you to manage your stress more effectively?
Psalm for daily use
“Come, let us praise the Lord joyfully, acclaiming the Rock of our safety…
If only you would listen to him today, ‘Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness, when your ancestors challenged me, tested me, although they had seen what I could do.”
(Psalm 95: 1, 7-8)
The Rock that yielded water in the desert or to the Rock on which the Temple was built…
Is your heart “hard” today? How can it be softened?
Faith guarantees salvation
“…We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ… And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(Romans 5:1-2, 5-8)
What three words best describe your life before you were a Christian?
How about now? Why the change?
Jesus Talks with a Samaritan Woman
“Jesus had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph… When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ‘Will you give me a drink?”
(John 4: 5 – 42)
How do you respond when someone speaks to you unexpectedly?
How would you compare your own spiritual beginning with God to that of the woman at the well?
How would you describe the way God is working in your life right now?
The question that JESUS puts to the Samaritan woman: “Give me a drink”; it expresses the passion of God for every man and woman, and wishes to awaken in our hearts the desire for the gift of “a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life”.
Only this water given to us by the Son, can irrigate the deserts of our restless and unsatisfied soul, until it “finds rest in God”, as per the famous words of St. Augustine.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
March 20, 2011
The call of Abraham
“The Lord had said Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and you father’s household and go to the land I will show you…So Abram left, as the Lord had told him…”
(Genesis 12: 1-4)
Where is “home” for you? When did you first leave there? What for? Who or what did you take with you?
Which restriction would you find more intolerable: Leaving your country, never to return? Or never leaving your present hometown? Why?
Hymn to Providence
“We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love rest upon us,
O Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”
(Psalm 33: 20-22)
How are both the love and the power of God evident in creation?
What are two things about creation that have impressed you about God’s power?
About his love?
Do these things help you to worship God?
Do you believe that God controls even “the plan of the nations”?
In what sense? Does that comfort you?
Encouragement to Be Faithful
“This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing life and immortality to light through the gospel.”
(2 Timothy 1: 9, 10)
What are some pressures on you that shake your faith? What encouragements do you find in this passage as you face those pressures? How can you respond with the spirit of power, love, and self-control God has given you?
The Transfiguration
“Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and let them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them…”
(Matthew 17: 1-9)
What was one mountaintop experience in your life?
What does it mean to be “transfigured”?
What did Moses represent? Elijah?
Why was Peter’s response inappropriate?
What is significant in what the voice from the cloud says about Jesus?
Why does Jesus silence the disciples?
“You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him.”
(cf. Col 2: 12)
The Gospel of the Transfiguration of the Lord puts before our eyes the glory of Christ, which anticipates the resurrection and announces the divinization of man. The Christian community becomes aware that Jesus leads it, like Peter, James and John “up a high mountain by themselves, to receive the gift of God’s grace.

This year’s annual Diocesan Appeal reminds us of the “Streams of Love for One Another.”

March 25 Friday
THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD
Today the Lord will give a sign: a child who has come to do God’s will, shall be conceived by the Spirit.
Nine months before Christmas!!!
We need to defend LIFE!
FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
March 13, 2011
The second account of the creation. Paradise
The Fall
“The Lord God fashioned man of dust from the soil. Then he breathed into his nostrils a breath of life, and thus man became a living being. Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden…
The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eyes and that it was desirable for the knowledge that it could give. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She gave some also to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.”
(Genesis 2: 7, 3:7)
What food do you find especially tempting?
How do you wish to respond to the choices that God is giving you? Disobedience, hide from God, seek to please God, or receive God’s compassion.
Miserere
“Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness, in your great tenderness wipe away my faults; wash me clean of my guilt, purify me from my sin.
For I am well aware of my faults, I have my sin constantly in mind…”
(Psalm 51: 1-2, 3)
Human being is born in a state of impurity (Job 14:4; Proverb 20:9) which is an implicit recognition of his tendency to evil.
Has covering up sin backfired in your life? How have you seen God’s mercy when you owned up to your sin?
Adam and Jesus Christ
“For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.”
(Romans 5: 19)
What quirks did you inherit from each of your parents? How do you see yourself reflected in your own children (if any)?
Write a thank-you letter to Jesus, reflecting on what he has done for you.
Temptation in the wilderness
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights…”
(Matthew 4: 1-11)
That these diabolical suggestions were actually made is quite compatible with Christ’s sinlessness. Jesus was faced with the idea of being a material and political Messiah with its accompanying human privileges of wealth, glory, power. He chose instead utter dependence on God, humility, obedience to God’s will.
“The First Sunday of the Lenten journey reveals our condition as human beings here on earth. The victorious battle against temptation, the starting point of Jesus’ mission, is an invitation to become aware of our own fragility in order to accept the Grace that frees from sin and infuses new strength in Christ –the way, the truth and the life.”
Benedictus PP.XVI

ANNUAL MINISTRIES APPEAL 2011
Streams of Love for One Another
“My being thirsts for God, the living God.”
Psalm 42:2
In our very being God forms us to seek him and his love and mercy. One of the ways that longing manifests itself in our lives is by encouraging us to reach out in love to others. In working together, we satisfy our thirst for God and create a stream of love through our ministries within the Diocese of Monterey. Through our working together, we can truly be Christ’s hands on earth. These ministries touch the lives of so many in our Diocese, from the youngest children in our Catholic school, to our young college students, to those studying for the priesthood and the deaconate, to assistance to our retired priests and many other ministries which help us to create a stream of love for one another.
I am asking for your generosity in giving to the Annual Ministries Appeal so that together we form a stream of love for one another.
+ Richard J Garcia Bishop of Monterey

(cf. Col 2:12)
Friday March 18 we have “Soup” at 6:00 p.m. and afterwards we will pray together in the Church.
All Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence in the Church
Lent the time of prayers for people who are ill, for addicts to be free of addiction; for wisdom of the parents, for protection of children and youth and for the people who work very hard in our Parish.
NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
MARCH 6, 2011
Love and Obey the Lord
“Let these words of mine remain in your heart and in your soul; fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a circlet… See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: a blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I enjoin on you today; a curse, if you disobey the commandments of the Lord your God and leave the way I have marked out for you today…”
(Deuteronomy 11: 18, 26-28)
What family traditions have you also received and kept?
When have you experienced the blessings of following God’s commands? What (reasons, resources, rewards) helped you to obey?
What “curses” have you or your nation experienced as the result of disobedience?
What is the lesson in that for you?
Prayer in timer of ordeal
“Be a sheltering rock for me, a walled fortress to save me! Into your hands I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, the God of truth. My times are in your hands; deliver me from my enemies…”
(Psalm 31: 2, 5, 15)
Both Jesus and Stephen quoted verse 5 as they were about die.
What would you like your “famous last words” to be?
What does the phrase “My times are in your hands,” mean to you: Time’s up? Time’s a-wasting? Fighting time? Killing time? Or God’s timing?
The revelation of God’s justice
“God’s justice that was made known through the Law and the Prophets has now been revealed outside the Law, since it is the same justice of God that comes through faith to everyone… All justified through the free gift of his grace by being redeemed in Christ Jesus… Since, as we see it, a man is justified by faith and not by doing something the Law tells him to do.”
(Romans 3: 21-22 24, 28)
Look up “justification,” “redemption,” and “atonement” in a dictionary. What everyday examples could you use to illustrate each word?
When did the message of God’s grace become real to you? What impact is it having on your life right now?
The true disciple
“Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock… But everyone who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand…”
(Matthew 7: 24, 27)
We are “to let the Word of God penetrate our life and in this way to know the fundamental truth: who we are, where we come from, where we must go, and what path we must take in life.” (Pope Benedict XVI).

“For Zion was saying, ‘The Lord has abandoned me, the Lord has forgotten me.’ Does a woman forget her baby at the breast, or fail to cherish the son of her womb? Yet even if these forget, I will never forget you.” (Isaiah 49:14-15)
When hurt as a child, did you normally run to mom, to dad or to whom? Why? What was the best way they could help you feel better?
Emotionally and spiritually, what does it mean to be a forsaken captive? What can cause you to feel that way?
Although we normally think of God as “our Father”, what insight do you gain about him from considering the image of God as a mother? How have you experienced this type of maternal care from God?
Hope in God alone
“In God alone there is rest for my soul, from him comes my safety; with him alone for my rock, my safety, my fortress…my glory, my strength…people, at all times; unburden your hearts to him, God is a shelter for us.”
(Psalm 62:1, 2-3, 6-7, 8-9)
What circumstances, people or forces are pressuring you now? What are you learning from their pressure?
In what do you trust first: God, yourself, people or money?
What do you trust second? Third?
Apostles of Christ
“People must thing of us as Christ’s servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God. What is expected of stewards is that each one should be found worthy of his trust.”
(1 Corinthians 4: 1-5)
What significant symbol of trust were you given early on, which later resulted in something funny happening: (a) Babysitting? (b) House sitting? (c) Keys to Dad’s car? (d) Preparing the Sunday meal? (e) Caring for your pet?
What mess did you once make while entrusted with this duty?
God and money
Trust in Providence
“No one can be the slave of two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.
That is why I am telling you not worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. Surely life means more than food, and the body more than clothing!”
(Matthew 6: 24-34)
Master always makes servants. What dominates our consciousness and dictates our actions is what we ultimately value and is that with which we identify ourselves.
If we feverishly seek money as the foundation of our security, we will have no time for the type of security God provides.
God and money as an either-or proposition, God and money can be integrated into the life of an individual.
But only God is the master.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 20, 2011
Various Laws & Worship
“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.’
…But love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.”
(Leviticus 19: 1-2, 18)
This chapter 19 is a literary unit with short introduction and conclusion. Its main theme is the holiness of the Lord, requiring holiness in his people.
In your growing up years, who was the disciplinarian in your family?
In your household now, who sets most of the rules? Who has to enforce them?
To be holy show to love each other like brothers and sisters!!!
God is love
“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits –which forgive all your sins and heal all your diseases, which redeem your life from the pit and crown you with love and compassion…”
(Psalm 103: 2-4)
When have you experienced God’s grace first hand? How have you benefited from it?
What would it mean to bring God’s grace into that situation?
You are of Christ
“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? I anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
… The world or life, or death or the present or the futures – all are yours, and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.”
(1 Corinthians 3: 16-17, 22-23)
How would you describe yourself in terms of a building (skyscraper, grass shack, bomb shelter, greenhouse, etc.? Why?
Given the clues about what makes for good “building materials,” what is one “concrete” way you could help build God’s temple in your community?
An Eye for an Eye + Love for Enemies
“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
(Matthew 5: 38-48)
The alternative of universal love is in imitation of the heavenly Father. His sun impartially shine upon the good and bad; his rains impartially fall upon the just and the unjust. This is the perfection of the Father, and the children are to embody it.
Whoever keeps the word of Christ, the love of God is truly perfected in him!

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 13, 2011
Human Beings are Free
"If you wish, you can keep the commandments; to behave faithfully is within your power. He has set fire and water before you; put out your hand to whichever you prefer. Man has life and death before him; whichever a man likes better will be given him. He never commanded anyone to be godless; he has given no one permission to sin."
(Ecclesiaticus or Sirach 15: 15-18, 20)
Righteousness in the language of the Old Covenant is the term for fidelity to the Torah (the Law), to the Word of God… It is the observance of the right path shown by God, with Ten Commandments at its center. The term that in the New Testament corresponds to the Old Testament concept of righteousness is faith…
In Praise of the divine Law
"Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart.
Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight."
(Psalm 119: 34-35)
'Alphabetical' psalm. The 8 verses of each strophe begin with one of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet and each verse contains one of the terms for the Law: decree, precept, statute, commandment, promise, word, judgment, and way. The word 'law' and its synonyms are here to be understood in the widest sense of revealed teaching, as handed on by the prophets. The psalm is one of the most remarkable monuments of Israelite devotion to the divine revelation.
What do you desire with all your heart?
Wisdom from the Spirit
"As it is written: 'No eyes has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him' –but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit."
(1 Corinthians 2: 9-10)
From the references to "wisdom" in this passage, what differences do you see between human wisdom and God's?
How does the condition for receiving spiritual wisdom differ from those necessary to gain the world's wisdom?
The fulfillment of the Law
The new standard higher than the old
"Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them."
(Matthew 5:17-37)
Murder, Adultery, Divorce, Oaths!
The law and prophets structure the relationship between God (heaven) and people (earth) and contain promises about the shape of salvation history. Therefore, as long as heaven and earth are connected and influencing one another and as long as promises remain unfulfilled, the law and the prophets are in effect.
The higher righteousness of Jesus reclaims this inner Spirit and its innate connection with justice, love, and compassion.

(John 15:14)
"A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends."

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 6, 2011
True Religion
“Shout for all you are worth, raise your voice like a trumpet.
‘I’ll tell you what it really means to worship the Lord.
Remove the chains of prisoners who are chained unjustly, to share your bread with the hungry, and shelter the homeless poor, to clothe the man you see to be naked and not turn from your own kin?”
(Isaiah 58: 1, 6-7)
What is your first reaction to TV or news-paper reports of homeless people: “They probably are just too lazy to work”? Or “we ought to do some-thing to help”? Why?
In praise of the virtuous
“Alleluia! For the upright he shines like a lamp in the dark, he is merciful, tenderhearted, and virtuous. Interest is not charged by this good man, he is honest in all his dealings.”
(Psalms 112: 4-5)
Would you say you are generous?
Give a recent example.
How could your generosity grow?
Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
“When I came to you, brother and sisters, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.”
(1 Corinthians 2: 1-2)
How do people today confuse the world’s power with God’s power?
What situations can you think of where God uses the weak, lowly, and despised to build his kingdom in our day?
Salt and Light
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.”
(Matthew 5:13, 14)
The deeper identity of people is now fully revealed. We are salt and light because God, whose children we are, is committed to making the earth and world something new. When we become who we are, we also become transparent to the One who makes us who are. “Glorifying the heavenly Father” is the recognition of his truth.

On Sunday, February 13, everyone is invited to gather at noon at Mountain Bible’s facility for a brief potluck lunch and then to assemble the packages. Last year nearly 1,000 pounds of items were gathered and placed in one-gallon bags that went to 450 soldiers. FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 30, 2011
A call to conversion
“Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility…”
(Zephaniah 2:3)
What hope does God offer to any who gather together contritely before him?
What attitudes and actions please the Lord? What will be the final result?
What contemporary “signs” (dark clouds and social distress) DO YOU SEE AS God’s warning to the nation? To the Church? To you?
Salvation is promised to the ‘humble’ or the ‘poor.’
Hymn to the God of help
“The Lord, who remains faithful forever… The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations.”
(Psalm 146: 6, 10)
Who does God seem to be most concerned about?
The true wisdom and the false
Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
“Take yourselves for instance, at the time when you were called: how many of you were wise in the ordinary sense of the world, how many were influential people, or came from noble families? No, it was to shame the wise that God chose what is foolish by human reckoning…”
(1 Corinthians 1: 26 -27)
What pictures come to mind when you think about powerful, successful people? How do those images sometimes conflict with following Christ?
What situation can you think of where God uses the weak, lowly, and despised to build kingdom in our day?
The Beatitudes
“Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit… mourn, meek, spiritual hunger, merciful, pure in heart, peacemaker and persecution…”
(Matthew 5: 1-12)
Of these eight qualities, which two do you desire most in your life? Why? Who in your family do you associate with each?
Based on the beatitudes, is the light of your life shining like a 300-watt bulb?
A 100-watt? A night light?
How can Jesus enable you to “shine brighter”?
Today the Parish of Christ Child gives to you and family the gift of candle!!!

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 23, 2011
We have seen a great light
“In days past he humbled the land of Zabulun and the land of Naphtali, but in days to come he will confer glory on the Way of the Sea on the far side of Jordan, province of the nations.
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shown.”
(Isaiah 9:1-2)
When were you most in need of, or grateful for, a flashlight? When have you gotten up early to greet the sunrise? What “dawn of a new day” are you anticipating on this year’s calendar?
What will be the light?
In God’s company there is no fear
“The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
(Psalm 27: 1, 14)
If you could ask “one thing” of the Lord, and have it granted, what would it be?
Why don’t you ask?
Divisions in the Church
“I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
(1 Corinthians 1:10)
What divides this church?
How does Paul undercut these divisions?
What facts about Jesus are essential for a church with internal strife?
Return to Galilee. The first four disciples are called. Jesus preaches and heals the sick.
“Jesus returned to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali… From that time on Jesus began to preach… As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he sea two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew… Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among people.”
(Matthew 4:12-13, 17-18, 23)
How has coming to know Jesus been like moving from darkness to light for you?
In what ways does God’s kingdom seem “now” for you? In what ways does it seem “not yet”?
Spiritually, are you still preparing the nets? Leaving the boat? Following hard after Jesus? Feeling left behind?
JESUS, the Messiah, who heals us of our sin and who is our unity and peace!

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 16, 2011
May all the earth give you worship and praise, and break into song to your name, O God, Most High.
Second song of the servant of the Lord
“He said to me, ‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor.’ ‘I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.”
(Isaiah 49:3, 6)
During your childhood who was your favorite hero? How did you show it?
In his discouragement, what promises does the servant receive from God?
Which of these traits of the servant seem beyond you?
Psalm 40
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced, burn offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
Then I said, ‘Here I am, I have come!”
(6, 7)
What sacrifice does God require from you?
Do you see any other foretastes of Jesus in the psalm?
Address and greetings. Thanksgiving
“I Paul, appointed by God to be an apostle…”
(1 Corinthians 1: 1-3)
Why would Paul stress that he is an apostle?
What is significant about the way Paul addresses this church?
What positive contribution has a particular Christian group made to your life?
The witness of John
“The next day, seeing Jesus coming towards him, John said, ‘Look, there is the lamb of God…’ ‘Yes, I have seen and I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.”
(John 1:29, 34)
What does he mean by calling Jesus the “Lamb of God” and the “Son of God”?
What proof supports these claims?
Of the titles for Jesus given so far (the Word, the Light, the Christ, the Lamb of God, the Son of God), which means the most to you? Why?
What is one “evidence” that has led you to faith in Jesus?
Jesus, the Lamb of God, is the light of the nations who came to do the Father’s will.
In Christ we have been called to be a holy people.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
January 2, 2011
Lord every nation on earth will adore you!
During this Christmas season in which we welcome the Prince of Peace into our hearts, let us pray for lasting peace in the world, especially in the Middle East and in Asia. Let us also pray that this new year we can value the uniqueness of every human person and respect one another regardless of race, sex, culture, belief or way of life. The prayer of Blessed Pope John XXIII reminds us that we are the children of the same Father.
“Sweet Child of Bethlehem, grant that we may share with all our hearts in this profound mystery of Christmas.
Pour into our hearts the peace which we sometimes seek so desperately, and which you alone can give.
Help us to know one another better and to live as brothers and sisters, children of the same Father.
Awaken in our hearts love and gratitude for your infinite goodness; join us together in your love; and gives us all your heavenly peace. Amen.”
Blessed Pope John XXIII (1881-1963)
Happy New Year 2011
Epiphany
“The Magi set out because of a deep desire which prompted them to leave everything and begin a journey. It was as though they had always been waiting for that star”
(Pope Benedict XVI).
Our response to the Father’s offer of salvation is that of the Magi: “To offer gold is to proclaim Christ’s kingship, to offer incense it to adore his Godhead and to offer myrrh is to acknowledge his mortality”
(Saint Odilo of Cluny).
Creation responds as well: “When the king of heaven was born, the heavens knew that he was God because they immediately sent forth a star; the sea knew him because it allowed him to walk upon it; the earth knew him because it trembled when he died; the sun knew him because it hid the rays of its light” (Saint Gregory the Great).
The manifestation of the Son of God to the world begs belief from us by which we will be led home by another way.
