THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD CHRISTMAS
December 25, 2005
Good News of Great Joy
The story of Christs birth has always generated tremendous hope.
Mary and Joseph coming for the census, the shepherds living in the area, the Magi traveling from the East- all of them with the greatest expectations and hopes that were fulfilled beyond expectation.
Christmas is hope fulfilled. Christmas is joy proclaimed to the world. Christmas is "good news of great joy," because God has decided to dwell among us, to become one of us and share the joys and sorrows of human life.
Thank You, God for Christmas for the gift of Your dear Son. For giving us Yourself in Jesus Christ, the Promised One. Whose birth and life and resurrection prove His words are true. All things are possible to those who place their trust in You.
With warmest wishes that God will bless your Christmas with the special gift of hopes and dreams come true.

LIVING IN SOLIDARITY
As soon as we call God, "God-with-us," we enter into a new relationship of intimacy with him. By calling him Immanuel, we recognize that he has committed himself to live in solidarity with us, to share our joys and pains, to defend and protect us, and to suffer all of life with us.
The God-with-us is a close God, a God whom we call our refuge, our stronghold, our wisdom, and even, more intimately, our helper, our shepherd, our love.
We will never really know God as a compassionate God if we do not understand with our heart and mind that "he lived among us" (John 1:14)

JUST SAY "YES" TO GOD
As a child, my parents would often tell me that the best present I could ever give them was to "just be good." This meant, among other things, always treating my younger siblings well-no matter what they did to me.
Pleasing God was what David did throughout his life. The second King of Judah and Israel ensured, during his long reign, that the Jewish people worshiped only Yahweh and not false idols as they had often done in the past.
Marys response pleased God too. Though Mary had a free choice and could have said "no" to Gods plans, she chose to give birth to this child. Her "yes" was the gift of her life to God to use as God wanted.
Shes an inspiring example to us of what God can do with us, in us, and through us when just says "yes".

Advent Season of Waiting

REJOICE, GOD IS NEAR!
Isaiah knows with certainty that God is coming to humanity to bring the gift of life. And this is a reason for rejoicing. Indeed the Christian world also rejoices on this day. "Gaudete" is the ancient Latin word that expresses the joy that marks the entrance of God into the humble lives of ordinary persons.
The advent of the Son of God was prepared by a divinely sent herald, John the Baptist, who appears in the Gospel of John as the messenger who comes to testify of the light.
For us this year, Gods coming in the person of Christ at this dark season is a personal summons into the light

OUR LADY OF GUDALUPE
In 1531 Our Lady appeared four times to a native convert, Juan Diego "Cuatitlatoatzin" (meaning "the talking eagle"), at Tepeyac, near Mexico City. A member of the Chichimeca people, he was perhaps a leader of his own people and may have been involved in the areas textile industry. Known for his holiness, he devoted himself, tradition says, to the pilgrims who came to see the miraculous image of Mary imprinted on his cloak. Pope John Paul II canonized him 31 July 2002.

JOHN OF THE CROSS
Poet, Teacher of the Faith, 1591
The feast of St. John of the Cross (14 December), the sixteenth-century Spanish mystic who speaks to me with great power. Not only did St. John experience oppression, humiliation, and imprisonment in his attempts to reform the Carmelite Order, but in the midst of his agony he experienced Gods love as a purifying flame and was able to express this love in the most profound mystical poetry.
St. John reveals the intimate connection between resistance and contemplation. He reminds us that true resistance against the power of destruction can be a lifelong commitment only when it is fed by an ardent love for the God of justice and peace. The ultimate goal of true resistance is not simply to do away with poverty, injustice, and oppression, but to make visible the all-restoring love of God. The true mystic always searches for this Divine knowledge in the midst of darkness. St. John sings "the Song of the Soul Delighted by the Knowledge of God" (el cantar del alma que se huelga de conocer a Dios). He sings this song "though it is night" (aunque es noche).
In the midst of our darkness St. John sings of a light too bright for our eyes to see. In this divine Light we find the source of our whole being. The Light sets us free to resist all evil and to be faithful in the darkness, always waiting for the day in which Gods presence will be revealed to us in all its glory.

God Comes to Transform Us
Trees shake. Animals lie low to the ground. A faint hum turns into a roar as the earth vibrates, heaves, buckles, and breaks open. Every living creature is utterly helpless. This is the experience of a "mild" earthquake.
Todays readings testify to the earth-shaking, transformative power of the Lords coming into our lives and societies. In Isaiah a messenger commands this transformation in order to open up a new road for God in the wilderness.
John the Baptist, another messenger in the wilderness, announces a different transformation the "good news" that Jesus comes to baptize not by water but with the Holy Spirit. When this happens, the psalm tells us, the Lords glory dwells among us and "Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss."
Are we ready? Will we allow the power of God to lift up and make low rough places in our lives?

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION
Thursday, December 8th is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be at 8:00 a.m. & 7:00 p.m.
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
In this feast it seems that all the quiet beauty of Advent suddenly bursts forth into exuberance and exultation. In Mary we see all the beauty of Advent concentrated. She is the one in whom the waiting of Israel is most fully and most purely manifested; she is the last of the remnant of Israel for whom God shows his mercy and fulfills his promises; she is the faithful one who believed that the promise made to her by the Lord would be fulfilled; she is the lowly handmaid, the obedient servant, the quiet contemplative. She indeed is the most prepared to receive the Lord.
I think of the painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel where God stretches out his hand to Adam to call him to life. How beautifully humanity is created. Now God again is stretching out his arm to she who waits for his touch by which humanity is re-created even more beautifully.
The celebration of this feast is the anticipation of the great event of Christmas. It makes me feel like a child on the evening before a wedding, full of joy and anticipation. I have already seen the bridal gown. I have already smelled the flowers. I have already heard the wedding song. There is no longer any doubt. Tomorrow it will surely happen; everything is ready to be fulfilled.
This feast day gives Advent its true character. It is indeed primarily a season of joy. It is not, like Lent, primarily a time of penance. No, there is too much anticipation for that.
All-overriding is the experience of joy.

ADVENT
Through the darkness of Advent, we move towards the Light.
Derived from a Latin root, Advent means "coming" or "arrival." Lasting only four weeks, it is traditionally a season of quiet and joyful expectancy.
The trees in the northern hemisphere may be barren but we do not lose hope. Advent has two-fold character: a time of preparation for the festival of the Nativity when the first coming of Gods Son to the world is recalled and a period of reflection pointing us to Christs second coming at the end of time. This is a season for prophecy, calling us to conversion, preparation and a constant sense of watchfulness.
Waiting Open-Endedly I have found it very important in my own life to let go of my wishes and start hoping. It was only when I was willing to let go of wishes that something really new, something beyond my own expectations, could happen to me. Just imagine what Mary was actually saying in the words, "I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let what you have said be done to me" (Luke 1:38). She was saying, "I dont know what this all means, but I trust that good things will happen." She trusted so deeply that her waiting was open to all possibilities. And she did not want to control them. She believed that when she listened carefully, she could trust what was going to happen.
To wait open-endedly is an enormously radical attitude toward life. It is trusting that something will happen to us that is fat beyond our own imaginings. It is giving up control over our future and letting God define our life. It is living with the conviction that God moulds us according to Gods love and not according to our fear. The spiritual life is a life in which we wait, actively present to the moments, expecting that new things will happen to us, new things that are far beyond our own imagination or prediction. That, indeed, is a very radical stance in a world preoccupied with control.

Christ the King. Final Judgment
The Parable of the Last Judgment (adaptation)
For I was hungry, and you were obese; Thirsty and you were watering your lawn;
A stranger and you called the police and were glad to see me taken away;
Naked and you were saying, "I dont have a thing to wear-I must get some new

Ill and you asked, "Is it contagious?"

What a wonderful way to show thanks to our Lord for all that He has given us.
CONGREGATION FOR DIVINE WORSHIP AND THE DISCIPLINE OF THE SACRAMENTS
"The faithful are not permitted to take the consecrated bread or the sacred chalice by themselves and, still less, to hand them from one to another. The norm for reception of Holy Communion in the dioceses of the United States is standing when receiving Holy Communion; the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister. The consecrated host may be received either on the tongue or in the hand, at the discretion of each communicant As soon as the communicant receives the host, he or she consumes it entirely. When Holy Communion is received under both kinds, the sign of reverence is also made before receiving (or pass in front) the Precious blood."

THE ETERNAL NOW
Eternal life. Where is it? When is it? For a long time I have thought about eternal life as a life after all my birthdays have run out. For most of my years I have spoken about the eternal life as the "afterlife," as "life after death." But the older I become, the less interest my afterlife holds for me. Worrying not only about tomorrow, next year, and the next decade, but even about the next life seems a false preoccupation. Wondering how things will be for me after I die seems, for the most part, a distraction. When my clear goal is the eternal life, that life must be reachable right now, where I am, because eternal life is life in and with God, and God is where I am here and now.
The great mystery of the spiritual life the life in God- is that we dont to wait for it as something that will happen later. Jesus says: "Dwell in me as I dwell in you." It is this divine indwelling that is eternal life. It is the active presence of God at the center of my living- the movement of Gods Spirit within us- that gives us the eternal life.
But still, what about life after death? When we live in communion with God, when we belong to Gods own household, there is no longer any "before" or "after". Death is no longer dividing line. When eternal life is our clear goal it is not a distant goal. When our heart understands this divine truth, we are living the spiritual life.

RE-MEMBERING
When we lose a dear friend, someone we have loved deeply, we are left with a grief that can paralyze us emotionally for a long time. People we love become part of us.
Our thinking, feeling, and acting are codetermined by them. Our fathers, our mothers, our husbands, our wives, our lovers, our children our friends they are all living in our hearts. When they die a part of us dies too. That is what grief is about: it is that slow and painful departure of someone who has become an intimate part of us. We sometimes have to live a whole year or more before our hearts have fully said good-bye and the pain of our grief recedes. But as we let go of them they become part of our "members" and as we "re-member" them, they become guides on our spiritual journey.

SIMON AND JUDE, Apostles
(28 October)
The knowledge of being loved in an unconditional way, before the world presents us with its conditions, cannot come from books, lectures, television programs or workshops. This spiritual knowledge comes from people who witness to Gods love for us through their words and deeds. These people can be close to us but they can also live far away or may even have lived long ago. Their witness announces the truth of Gods love and calls us to act in accordance with it.
JESUS GREAT COMMANDMENT
In our nations archives there is an account of two women from Tennessee who came before President Abraham Lincoln at the conclusion of the Civil war. They were asking for the release of their husbands held as prisoners of war at Johnsons Island. Lincoln put them off until Friday, when they came again. Again the President put them off until Saturday. At each of the interview one of the ladies stressed to Lincoln that her husband was a religious man. After the Saturday interview the President ordered the release of the prisoners. Then he turned to this lady and said, "You say your husband is a religious man. Tell him when you meet him, that I say I am not much of a judge of religion. In my opinion, however, the religion that sets men to rebel and fight against their governments (so that they can) eat their bread on the sweat of other mens faces, is not the sort of religion upon which people can get to heaven!"
All the virtues are interconnected. Does our love bear the fruit of justice?

The Spirit of the Liturgy
The Body and the Liturgy.
To express one of its main ideas for the shaping of the liturgy, the Second Vatican Council gave us the phrase participatio actuosa, the "active participation" of everyone in the opus Dei action of God, in what happens in the worship of God. It was quite right to do so.
The word "part-icipation" refers to a principal action in which everyone has a "part". And so if we want to discover the kind of doing that active participation involves, we need, first of all, to determine what this central actio is in which all the members of the community are supposed to participate.
The study of the liturgical sources provides an answer that at first may surprise us, though, in the light of the biblical foundations considered in the first part, it is quite self-evident. By the actio of the liturgy the sources mean the Eucharistic Prayer. The real liturgical action, the true liturgical act, is the oratio, the great prayer that forms the core of the Eucharistic celebration, the whole of which was, therefore, called oratio by the Fathers.
Perhaps it would be useful to note here that the word oratio originally means, not "prayer" (for which the word is prex), but solemn public speech. Such speech now attains its supreme dignity through its being addressed to God in full awareness that it comes from him and is made possible by him.
But this is only just a hint of the central issue. This oratio the Eucharist Prayer, the "Canon"- is really more than speech; it is actio in the highest sense of the word.

THE VULNERABLE AUTUMN LEAVES
Most importantly, to be vulnerable is to know the paradoxical power in surrendering ourselves to God. It is to allow the power of Gods spirit to take over and to move through our being. It is to know that by ourselves we can do nothing, but with a surrendered heart we can do all things through the One who gives us strength. With a surrendered heart, we can have the power in us to do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. We can easily forget this gift of power and try to shield ourselves from any possible hurt, pain, question, doubt, heartache, and risk, any of the tough stuff of life.
Again, I think of the trees and I look to them. Have you ever noticed that some trees still have leaves hanging onto them in deep December? Long after autumn the dead brow things clutch in clumps at ends of branches or trail alone at the end of a twig. They must know that eventually winter claims them all. Like the leaves are those humans who think that growth is possible without letting go. They deny, fight, or refuse to accept what is being asked in order that new life can take place.
This October, let us pause and allow the falling leaves to remind us of the call to be vulnerable, the call to be open to the possibility of being hurt, and the call to accept and to grow from the daily doings of our days and to love as Jesus loved.
Go for a walk in the forest or just down the street if you have some trees nearby whose leaves have turned. Let your heart roam through the leaves. Think thoughts of vulnerability. Pick up a leaf. Take it home with you. Place it somewhere where you will see it often. Let it remind you of the call to be vulnerable.
Take time to browse through a gospel. Note all the time that Jesus opened himself to hurt and misunderstanding. Allow yourself to be a bit more open and vulnerable to someone whom you love. Surrender yourself a bit more to Gods power working through you. Let October be a time when the value of vulnerability is strengthened in your life.

THE VULNERABLE AUTUMN LEAVES
I finally realize why Ive grown to appreciate autumn so much. It is because the trees tell me so much about life, especially about the inner season of our lives. Each year as I begin to notice that the leaves are going golden, I reflect that the trees seem to give themselves over to the "letting go" process much more freely than humans.
Trees readily allow autumn to have their summer leaves. Trees allow the frost to touch them and the wind to toss them. They allow the season to make it appear that all is lost and that there is no green growth left. But they know better, for even at their most barren moment, when one can look among the branches and see scars and knotholes the leaves once hid, the trees already show terminal buds with the secret of next springs leafing in them.
We humans have a lot to learn from autumn trees. No one of us wants to be so surrendered, so vulnerable to winter as the October trees. Yet, each of us, if we are truly open to growth and change, will experience this in our inner selves. Our relationships and our experiences of life will ask us to be open, to be willing to let go in order that new growth can come.
New growth means change. Trees tell us this. Life tells us this. Jesus tells us this. One of the most beautiful aspects of the Incarnation is that the Son of God allowed himself to be vulnerable. He came as one of us and he opened himself up in love to the possibility of failure, being wounded, misunderstood, and rejected, all of those things that we know as "daily dyings," like those autumn leaves fast falling from trees.
Jesus allowed himself to be vulnerable. To be vulnerable in this way is to freely choose:
-To be open to the others, no matter whom that other is.
-To stand firmly on our convictions amid controversy.
-To risk our voice or actions even though theres a possibility of being
misunderstood, rejected, thwarted or even condemned.
-To share from our faith even through we may be questioned or ignored,
laughed at or thought to be stupid.
-To risk failure in order to discover and use our giftedness and potential.
-To love and to continue loving even when there is not positive response from
the one being loved.

The parable of the two sons:
"When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did."
Matthew 21:28-32
God bless the wild child
In her book Meditations for Misfits, Marcia Ford shared the following;
"One Sunday morning, our pastor interrupted his sermon on hope. Those of you who have adult children that youre praying for, children who have left the faith or never embraced the faith and are now living apart from God, I want you to stand, he said. The rest of us sat and watched as these grieving parents stood. "Now, those of you who were once wayward children, who in your adult years had strayed far from God and have since returned, I want you to stand. As dozens of us rose to our feet yes, of course, I was part of the second group- he said, Moms, Dads, theres your hope."
Today Gospel should be a source of hope for those of us struggling to help our children understand and appreciate our faith in the God of compassion and forgiveness. Even though they may eschew the rituals and traditions of our faith, havent they embraced, for the most part, the Gospel values they have learned for us? Christ promises that despite their rejection of God, God has not rejected them; he continues to be present to them in their own acts of "righteousness." So rejoice in hope. Mom and Dad, and be patient: God is with us despite ourselves.

people begin moving out of this deep silence, stillness and communal solitude,
back into the world of words, and sometimes frenetic activity and sociological
responsibility in family, church, and work in the world. After this time, church will move to the more functional aspects of the
Church and local civil community by way of announcements. These sometimes seem a
bit schizophrenic after the very personal and intimate things we have just
experienced, but they are really a natural outgrowth and progression from the
deep mystery of the Eucharist into the functional realities of life. It is, in
fact, there that the new evangelization, the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus
Christ through all that we are, takes place in the most tangible ways. TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 21, 2005 As Eliakim is given authority as master of the place, so does Jesus confer

place until everyone has received Communion. We sit together, yet very much in privacy, in the solitude of our own
emotions, thoughts, and spiritual intuitions. At this point the Church
recommends that liturgy be minimized, in terms of action, words, songs, or
gesture. The ideal liturgy at this moment is silence. The ideal communal
experience is solitude together. After having received the greatest mystery, the
Sacrament, we enter into a place that is beyond words, beyond emotions, beyond
ideas, thoughts, or forms, beyond action. It is ultimate action in stillness,
ultimate word in silence, ultimate emotion in pure spiritual intuition. It is
simply being with he who is. As the saints have said, at this moment, we are
simply with he who is. We simply be together. We are one. This moment is not to
be rushed, or prematurely ended. It is to be given great space and time, so that
Jesus might speak his word beyond all words, within the fullness of our being
with the fullness of his being. TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 14, 2005 All people are invited to worship the Lord and to know his ways. August 15, Monday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mass 7:00 p.m. Because she belonged to Christ, Mary, our queen, is raised on high, a great sign for all who believe in her Son. BIBLE STUDY Wednesday from 7 pm. To 8:30 pm. With Fr. Eugenio. Gospel of Matthew Everyone is Welcome! A FAMILY TRADITION Communion time
To continue our journey in Christ, the journey is not made alone, or without the wonderful power of worship and prayer as individuals, and as a community. Finally, we stand before the priest, or the lay minister of the Eucharist. Before receiving Communion, some make a reverent bow and a sign of the cross. Some will receive reverently within their open and naked hands, the left hand resting gently but firmly upon the right, or upon the tongue, as has been done for many years in the Western Church. Both are symbols of great childlikeness and humility. The open hands a symbol of nakedness, emptiness, and poverty. You cannot hold anything else while opening yourself to this mystical or sacramental experience of Jesus. We must let go of all to receive he who is the author of all and in fact is all. We are overwhelmed as we receive a Creator within the palm of our own hands. He who is so great because he is willing to be so vulnerable for our salvation. He who is the author of all, being held within the palm of the hand of his own creation. Those who receive upon the tongue manifest this humility in the face of this great wonder by saying they are not even willing to dare to hold in the palm of their own hands the King of kings and the Lord of lords. It is a humbling thing to stand before another human being, extending ones tongue, even as a babe waiting to be fed by its mother, mother Church. The experience is like that of a chick being fed by the mother bird. It is a statement of total poverty and vulnerability before the minister of the Church, and yes, most important, before God himself. It is the ultimate expression of vulnerability in the place of he who became so vulnerable for us, so that we might be brought back to the full strength of the original plan of God for all of humanity. loaves and two fish. The message of stewardship is that God's gifts, SHARED,
will always be more than enough. Often, through, it is with the open hands of generous
stewards willing to share His many gifts that God's people are fed and their
needs met. URGENT! We need FOOD for the people in NEED! Plate Collection: July 23 & 24, 2005 $1,210.00 Weekly Plate Collection needed$1,885.00 Please help us! Thank you for your faithful support! BIBLE STUDY A FAMILY TRADITION It is during this Liturgy of the Eucharist that the ondained
minister of the Church representing apostolic succession, and the faculties
granted with or from the local bishop, first invokes the power of the Holy
Spirit over the elements (bread & wine), in the "Epiclesis" within the
Eucharistic Prayer, and then with word and gesture, and the power of his office,
confects the Eucharist, changing the simple elements of bread and wine into the
real presence of Jesus, body and blood, under the appearance of bread and wine. This is the fullness of sign, symbol, and sacrament. AUGUST The Fearful Heart In a beautiful little book, Making All Things New, Henri Nouwen points to worrying as a major hindrance of spiritual growth: "One of the most notable characteristics of worrying is that
it fragments our lives. The many things to do, to think about, to pray for, the
many people to remember, to visit, or to talk with, the many causes to attack or
defend, all these pull us apart and make us lose our center. PLEASE PRAY for ALL the SICK members of OUR
PARISH and for those who care for them. RETROUVAILLE HIKE TO RAILROAD TUNNEL

Every one is welcome!
From the Liturgy of the Word, we move into the Liturgy of the
Eucharist, our deepest mystery. The Liturgy itself is composed of scripture and
the ancient prayers of Catholic Christianity.
All that is Church is represented in this ineffable coming
together of every aspect of the faith.
The priest is there, who represents the whole of the
Christian community to God, and the whole of Jesus to the Christian community.
The gesture is there, representing that Jesus came in the
flesh and that he saves us full and entire, inclusive, not only in spirit, but
also our body.
The Word is there, representing not just a written word, not
just a vaguely interpretive apostolic tradition, but its fullness, scripture,
and tradition and the magisterium of the Church.
The Church is there, in the priest or bishop and people, who
represent not only Christ and the fullness of the Church but the apostles of the
Church as well, the fullness of apostolic succession.
Worrying causes us to be "all over the place," but seldom at
home. One way to express the spiritual crisis of our time is to say that most of
us have an address but cannot be found there.
We know where we belong, but we keep being pulled away in
many directions, as if we were still homeless.
"All these other things" keep demanding our attention.
They lead us so far from home that we eventually forget our
true address, that is, the place where we can be addressed."
A good question to ask is: "Why do I worry?" and "What do I
worry about?"
Jesus said: "It is I. Do not be afraid"
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as
your wife."
"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill
the soul."
"Yahweh is my light and my salvation, whom need I fear?"
