What a gift prayer is! It is the real treasure of our soul, our being able to give to God the worship of perfect adoration.
(Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini Nov.13)
Stewardship gives us the power to change how we live our lives.
How we use our time can change our life.
Stewards can use time to further the kingdom of God by worshiping and praying together as a family, studying Scripture or simply spending time with family members.

Communion with the Dead
In full consciousness of this communion of the whole Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the Church in its pilgrim members, from the very earliest days of the Christian religion, has honored with great respect the memory of the dead; and because it is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins’ she offers her suffrages for them. Our prayer for them is capable not only of helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective.
THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 31, 2010
Wisdom
“In your sight the whole world is like a grain of dust that tips the scales, like a drop of morning dew falling on the ground.
Yes, you love all that exists; you hold nothing of what you have made in abhorrence…
Little by little, therefore, you correct those who offend…”
(Wisdom 11:22, 25; 12:2)
The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.
Hymn of praise to the Lord the king
“I sing your praise, God my King, I bless your name forever and ever, blessing you day after day, and praising your name forever and ever.”
(Psalm 145:1-2)
Why does God deserve praise? What method will be used to spread the divine king’s fame?
What king of ruler is God to you?
a) Benevolent king? b) Harsh dictator?
c) Ceremonial monarch? d) Democratic leader? e) Prime minister?
What has influenced your picture of God? Does it need adjusting?
Thanksgiving and encouragement.
The Last Judgment
“We constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling…
Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gather to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by some prophecy…”
(2 Thessalonians 1:11; 2:1)
Put Saint Paul’s prayer in your own words and pray it for one another this week.
What do we need to do today to be morally alert?
Let us be more concerned with doing the Lord’s work than with idle speculation about when he will come again
.
Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
“Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man…”
(Luke 19:1-3)
Why do you think Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus house for dinner? He felt sorry for him; he wanted to talk to him about his shady business; he needed a spectacular miracle to gain credibility in the town; he knew he had what Zacchaeus was seeking.
Suppose Jesus was to invite himself to your house…
During November, we are called in a special way “to remember our brother and sisters who have gone to their rest.”
Envelopes are available in the church to inscribe the names of your beloved dead so we can remember them in our prayers during the month of November

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 24, 2010
The justice of God
“…Since the Lord is a judge (God of justice) who is no respect of personages. He shows no respect of personages to the detriment of a poor man; he listens to the plea of the injured party.”
(Ecclesiasticus or Sirach 35:12)
Ben Sirach is both a firm supporter of liturgical worship and a moralist who insists on the Law’s precepts of justice and charity.
These two enthusiasms unite at this point; Ben Sira maintains that the observance of the Law is itself a fulfillment of ritual worship.
In praise of God’s justice
“They cry for help and the Lord hears and rescues them from all their troubles; the Lord is near to the broken-hearted, he helps those whose spirit is crushed.”
(Psalm 34: 17-18)
Peter uses this psalm to comfort those who suffer for doing good. (1 Peter 3:10-12)
How do you reconcile the “good things” the Lord promises with the acute suffering experienced by some Christians?
Paul in the evening of his life
“As for me, my life is already being poured away as a libation, and the time has come for me to be gone. I have fought the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the finish; I have kept the faith; all there is to come now is the crown of righteousness reserved for me…”
(2 Timothy 4: 6-7)
Having heard Paul’s cries for help, the Lord crowned him with eternal salvation.
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
“To some who were confident of their righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray…”
(Luke 18: 9)
If Jesus told this story today, what group of people would be the ‘Pharisee’? The ‘tax collector’? What would be the Pharisee’s prayer?
Right now, considering your attitudes toward others and why you hope God will accept you, which are you most like? Why?
Humility is the recognition that no matter what our accomplishments, we still stand in need of the Lord.
The Lord hears the cry of the poor!
God was reconciling the world to him-self in Christ, and entrusting to us the message of salvation!
Many of life’s hassles are mere tests of our strength. Lord, help me remember that patience can often diffuse a situation quicker than a snap response.

TWENTIETH-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 17, 2010
A battle against the Amalekites
“Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.’
…When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up –one on one side, one on the other- so that his hands remained steady till sunset.”
(Exodus 17: 9, 12-13)
With raised arms see who can keep them up the longest. How does it feel? Have two people prop up the arms of the group leader: What happens after doing this for 12 hours?
When and how have you needed your faith propped up?
What battle has God won in your life lately?
The guardian of Israel
“I lift up my eyes to the hills- where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
(Psalm 121: 1-2)
This psalm is equally appraised for pilgrims on the hard road to Jerusalem, as for those on their pilgrimage to the heavenly Jerusalem.
What dangers lie on the road on inward journeys?
Does God protect you?
Do you feel invincible?
What form has God’s protection taken for you?
When do you feel most vulnerable? How do you protect your-self?
Paul’s charge to Timothy
“…As for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures… All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in the righteousness.”
(2 Timothy 3:14-15, 16)
Who was the best teacher you ever had?
What does Paul say about the origin and purpose of Scripture that is especially relevant to Timothy’s case?
Since the Bible is central to Christian living, how will you build it into your life?
The unscrupulous judge and the importunate widow
“Then Jesus told them a parable about the need to pray continually and never lose heart.”
(Luke 18: 1)
Through incessant prayer, we open ourselves more fully to understanding God’s will.
Through faith in the power of prayer, we experience God’s love and assistance.
Our Christian life is nourished by the scriptures we read and by our received tradition.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
We’re ALL Missionaries
Do you know the date of your Baptism?
Well, on that day, you became a missionary, called by our Lord to share your faith with those around you –and to be part of the Church’s mission to the world.
Jesus himself, before He returned to the Father, promised His followers the Holy Spirit and charged them then with His “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8)
That mission is now addressed to each one of us. We are to support, in prayer and sacrifice, the work of missionaries who bring the “Good News” of Jesus to faraway places – to Africa and Asia, to the Pacific Islands and remote regions of Latin America.
ONE SUNDAY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD!

TWENTIETH-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 10, 2010
Naaman Healed of Leprosy
“Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh were restored and became clean like that of a young boy… Now I know that there is no God in the entire world except in Israel.”
(2 Kings 5:14-15)
When did you come to the settled conviction that “there is no God but the God of Israel”?
What did it take to convince you?
Since there is only one God, aren’t all religion just different ways to God? Or is the inside heart of the person really different, and not just the outside form of religion?
The judge of the world
“Sing Yahweh a new song for he has performed marvels, his own right hand, his holy arm, gives him the power to save. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel…”
(Psalm 98:1, 3)
Do you expect God to do new things in your life? Or do you think a lot about how God should change the next person?
How is Israel’s salvation an opportunity for the nations?
How Timothy should face hardships
“Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel…
(2 Timothy 2:8)
Let us remain steadfast in faith!
Ten Healed of Leprosy
“…Ten men who had leprosy met Jesus. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus Master, have pity on us!” One of them went he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice…”
(Luke 17:12-13, 15)
What was it like to be a leper?
What would their healing mean for them?
As one of the nine, how would you rationalize not going back to Jesus to say “thanks”?
What is significant about one being a Samaritan.
How has Jesus healed you spiritually? Physically? Emotionally?
In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.
“Let us always be mindful of Christ’s love.”

REVERENCE FOR LIFE
“Whoever welcomes a child welcomes Me”
(Mk 9:37)
Life is sacred
The life of every human being is sacred as the creation of God, and is of infinite value because He created each person including the unborn child.
The image of God is on that unborn child…
Mother Teresa
TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
October 3, 2010
First complaint of the prophet: lawlessness prevails
“How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, ‘Oppression!’ in your ear and you will not save?”
Second oracle: the upright man will live by faithfulness
“See how he flags, he whose soul is not at rights, but the upright man will live by his faithfulness.”
(Habakkuk 1:2; 2:4)
Where are you, too, crying out, but unheeded? What then do you say? Feel? Act?
‘God may seem to be late, but is invariably on time’- Would Habakkuk say that? Would you? How does God measure “time”?
Psalm for daily use
“Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.”
(Psalm 95: 1-2)
Why use music to rejoice?
What dimension does music add to words?
What does bowing or kneeling represent in verse 6
“Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the Lord who made us.”
Encouragement to Be Faithful
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord…
Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you – guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.”
(2 Timothy 1: 7-8; 14)
What are some pressures on you that shake your faith?
How can you respond with the spirit of power, love, and self-control God has gives you?
When it comes to living out your faith, what do you have in common with a soldier? An athlete? A farmer? What don’t you have in common with them?
The power of faith
Humble service
“The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’
The Lord replied, ‘Were your faith the size of a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’, and it would obey you.
…So with you: when you have done all you have been told to do, say, ‘We are merely servants we have done no more than our duty’.”
(Luke 17:5-6; 9-10)
Faith is a gracious gift from God.
It can neither be earned nor bought, only responded to with works of love and service.
A vibrant faith can make us strong, loving, and wise, confident that God will guard us from all harm.
God is the Rock of our salvation!

Nations which destroy life are the poorest
For me… life is the most beautiful gift of God to mankind, therefore people and nations who destroy life by abortion and euthanasia are the poorest-for they have not got food for one more child, home for one old person. So they must add one more cruel murder into this world.

TWENTIETH-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 26, 2010
Against the self-indulgent and their false sense of security
“Thus says the Lord the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria…!
…But about the ruin of Joseph they do not care at all!”
(Amos 6:1, 6)
What three things give you a secure feeling?
When was the last time you had everything going for you?
Is the prophet Amos condemning a life of luxury, or something more?
What will happen to those who have the most prosperity and privilege and yet abuse it?
Tell three areas of your life in which you feel somewhat insecure.
Is God a God of the rich (blessing them), or of the poor (defending them)?
Hymn to the God of help
“Alleluia! Praise the Lord.
He upholds the cause of the oppressed, gives food to the hungry, sets prisoners free, gives sight to the blind, lifts up those who are bowed down, watches ever the alien, sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.”
(Psalm 146:7, 8-9, 9-10)
The Psalm 146 to 150 recited by Jews in the morning. What do they see in your life that glorifies God? Does God step in where human help stops? Or is God’s will performed strictly through human action?
Self-sufficiency must never blind us to the needs of others.
Timothy’s vocation recalled
“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
(1 Timothy 6:11-12)
Are you wandering spiritually, or are you in hot pursuit of the qualities of: righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience and gentleness.
Which quality do you especially want to develop in your life?
The rich man and Lazarus
“There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day. And at his gate there lay a poor man called Lazarus…”
(Luke 16: 19 - 31)
What does this story teach you about human nature? Why is it so difficult for people to be convinced of God’s ways?
In sum, what ought we to do with our lives on earth?
In this story of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus echoes Amos, exhorting those who have to share with those who have not.

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 19, 2010
Against swindlers and exploiters
“Listen to this, you who trample on the needy and try to suppress the poor people of the country… The Lord has sworn by the Pride of Jacob: ‘I will never forget anything they have done.”
(Amos 8:4, 7)
Amos cries out against those who exploit the poor for the sake of extortion and greed.
What sins is Amos condemning? Where else have you heard Amos sound this familiar theme?
Is this ‘God who won’t forget’ consistent, or inconsistent, with what you know of God?
To God the glorious, the merciful
“Alleluia! Praise the Lord who raise the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of their people.”
(Psalm 113: 1, 7)
Why praise “God’s name”?
If God always exalts the poor and needy, why are they so dishonored in your society?
How should the Christian act towards them? How can you develop this trait?
How Timothy should face Liturgical prayer
Instructions on Worship
“I urge, then, fist of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone… To do this is right, and will please God our savior: he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth… In every place, then, I want the men to lift their hands up reverently in prayer, with no anger or argument.”
(1 Timothy 2: 1, 3, 8)
Nero was emperor when this was written; the end of the verse probably reflects Paul’s apprehensions about what the future would bring: that we may live peaceful, quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
What attitudes for worship mentioned here are yours to cultivate?
When church and society treat people unequally, how do you feel or act?
We can truly pray with blameless hands for all those in need!
The crafty steward – The right use of money
“…Then the steward said to himself, ‘Now that my master is taking the stewardship from me, what am I to do? Dig? I am not strong enough. Go begging? I should be too ashamed, Ah, I know what I will do to make sure that when I am dismissed from office there will be some to welcome me into their homes.’ …And so I tell you this: use money, tainted as it is, to win you friends, and thus make sure that when it fails you, they will welcome you into the tents of eternity.”
(Luke 16:3-4, 9)
Why would it be important for Jesus’ disciples to hear this parable?

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 12, 2010
Israel’s Apostasy. The Covenant Renewed
Moses forewarned by Yahweh
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt….’
But Moses pleaded with the Lord, his God. ‘Lord,’ he said ‘why should your wrath blaze out against this people of yours who you brought out of the land of Egypt with arm outstretched and mighty hand?”
(Exodus 32: 7, 11)
Moses is shown as the great mediator; at the time of the plagues; on behalf of his sister Miriam, and especially on behalf of the people on their desert journey… His intercession foreshadows that of Christ.
When another person lets you down, are you most likely to: be disappointed; get mad; find another friend; turn to a hobby; or eat junk food.
“Miserere”
“God, create a clean heart in me, put into me a new and constant spirit, do not banish me from your presence, does not deprive me of your holy spirit.”
(Psalm 51: 10)
Penitential Psalm…for a contrite and humbled heart God will never spurn.
Paul on his own calling
“I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, and who judged me faithful enough to call me into his service
-even though I used to be a blasphemer…”
(1 Timothy 1:12)
What word would you use to describe your life before you became a Christian? Since then? What does that show you about the Lord’s patience?
The three parables of God’s mercy
The parable of the Lost Sheep
The parable of the Lost Coin
The parable of the Lost Son
“… and the Pharisees and the scribes complained. ‘This man’ they said ‘welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
(Luke 15: 1-32)
How could these stories affect your relationship with those you know who wander from the faith?
The Lord delights not in sin, but in our turning back to him!!!
God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation!

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 5, 2010
In praise of Wisdom
“What man indeed can know the intentions of God? Who can divine the will of the Lord? Who, then, can discover, who could is in the heavens?
The earthen shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns…”
(Wisdom 9:13, 15, 16)
The book entitled ‘The Book of Wisdom’ by the vulgate is known in the Greek manuscripts as ‘The Wisdom of Solomon’.
Who can comprehend the Lord’s ways or conceive what the Lord intends?
True wisdom leads us to acknowledge our limitations (a matter of “calculation”) and our idols of materialism…
The human condition
“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations!
Teach us the number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
(Psalm 90; 1, 12)
A sage’s meditation on the shortness of human life made shorter still by sin… Life is short. Why is humanity full of “trouble and sorrow”?
What do you think is the biggest difference between God and people? What difference is hardest to understand? Hardest to accept?
Paul’s Plea for Onesimus
“…Yet I appeal to you on the basic of love… I appeal to you for my son Onesimus… So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.”
(Philemon 9, 10, 17)
‘Onesimus’ means ‘useful’
When do you feel obligated to forgive someone: When they confess their sin? When they later change their behavior? When someone else intercedes for the offending party?
For whom might you serve as a “Paul’ in bringing about reconciliation?
The Cost of Being a Disciple
“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters -yes, even his own life- he cannot be my disciple.
In the same way, any of you who do not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.”
(Luke 14: 26, 33)
When did you realize that following Jesus was costly? How so?
Jesus is now their center, and there is no room for competing loyalties.
If Jesus is their center, then the cross is their way.
Lord, set us free!
God our Father, look upon us, gives us true freedom and brings us to the inheritance you promised. Amen.

Hi Everyone
One of our Christ Child parishioners is looking for some help…
As you may know, Tracie Perniciaro’s husband, Paul, passed away a few months ago. Tracie is looking for people to help her out on Monday, September 6, so if you’ve got some time on Monday stop by for a few hours and give a hand.
Tracie’s invitation reads: “…come help me get ready to market the house. We’ll be planting, eating and drinking. If you don’t want to get dirty, I do need someone to run the BBQ and watch the kids so the plants don’t get covered in paint? Feel free to forward to others – the more the merrier, many hands make light work, and all that… did I mention we’ll have food and drink?
If you plan on attending give Tracie a call

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 29, 2010
Humility
“My son, be gentle in carrying out your business, and you will be better loved that a lavish giver.
The greater you are, the more you should behave humbly, and then you will find favor with the Lord; for great though the power of the Lord is, he accepts the homage of the humble.”
(Ecclesiasticus or Sirach 3:17-21)
The book forms part of the Greek Bible though it does not appear in the Jewish Canon; it is therefore one of the deuterocanonical books accepted by the Church.
The Latin title “Ecclesiasticus” is relatively recent (St. Cyprian); it probably calls attention to the fact that the Church adopted it for her official use although the Synagogue did not.
Humility and self-knowledge go hand in hand. Those who conduct their affairs with humility shall be exalted, while those who exalt themselves shall be humbled.
National song of triumph
“Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extols him who rides on the clouds –his name is the Lord- and rejoices before him.”
(Psalm 68:4)
This hymn of thanksgiving covers the chief stages in the history of the people of God, like those of a triumphal progress by the Lord: the Exodus from Egypt, the journey through the desert…
Give a brief review of your personal “salvation history”: What was your “Egypt”? Your Exodus? Desert? Promised Land? Kingdom expansion? What evil had to be rooted out of your life?
The two Covenants
“…But you come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God… to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.”
(Hebrews 12: 22, 24)
What efforts have you made to “live in peace with all”?
On choosing places at table
“Now on a Sabbath day Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely…
He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honor…”
What does this teach you about kingdom values vs. social values and their application at the final banquet?
GOD, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor!

Thinking about Separation or Divorce?
Is your marriage or that of a relative or friend heading for divorce? Do you know how to save that marriage? Or do you feel helpless? Retrouvaille is designed to help troubled marriages regain their health. It helps spouses uncover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought them together. The program is highly successful in saving hurting marriages, even bringing reconciliation to couples who have already separated or divorced. For confidential information about or to register for the program beginning with a weekend on Sep. 24-26, 2010, call 831-479-1260 or email: [email protected] or visit the web site at www.HelpOurMarriage.com
TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
August 22, 2010
An eschatological discourse
“I am coming to gather the nations of every language. They shall come to witness my glory. I will give them a sign and send some of their survivors to the nations…”
(Isaiah 66: 18-19)
Throughout Isaiah, God’s ultimate concern has been for all nations.
What types of people do you find it hard to reach out to or care about? Why?
What does the final vision (of the glory of God being declared among the nations) say to you about the loving purposes of God for those hard-to-love people?
No one is to be excludes from the kingdom for all peoples are called to proclaim the praises of the Lord and confess his holy name.
No ethnic or religious group possesses exclusive right to the kingdom.
Summons to praise
“Alleluia! Praise the Lord, all nations, extols him, all you people! For his love is strong, his faithfulness eternal.”
(Psalm 117: 1-2)
Have you ever been excluded from a group? Why?
Why is this psalm so short? Who are the “nations”?
What outsiders need to be included in your life? Give examples of broken barriers.
“Go out to the entire world and tell the Good News!”
God’s fatherly instruction
“My son, when the Lord corrects you, does not treat it lightly; but do not get discouraged when he reprimands you. For the Lord trains the ones that he loves and he punishes all those that he acknowledges as his sons.”
(Hebrews 12: 5-6)
What have you discovered that helps you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus?
How gas God disciplined you in the past?
How did his discipline lead to peace for you?
What’s the hardest thing you’re going through right now? How is God using this in your life?
The narrow door; rejection of the Jews, call of the gentiles
“Someone said to him, ‘Sir, will there be only a few saved?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Try your best to enter by the narrow door, because I tell you, many will try to enter and will not succeed’.
I do not know where you come from!”
(Luke 13:22-30)
According to Jesus, who will make it through the narrow door and who won’t?
If God wants all kinds of people (v.29) to know him, why isn’t the door wider?
Why isn’t eating and drinking with Jesus enough?
In the end, do you think only “a few” or “many” or “all” people will be saved? Why?

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
August 15, 2010
The vision of the woman and the dragon
“The God’s temple in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.
Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman, adorned with the sun, standing on the moon, and with the twelve stars on her head for a crown. She was pregnant, and in labour, crying aloud in the pangs of childbirth.”
(Revelation 11: 19, 12:1)
The woman is essentially an image of Israel as the mother of the messianic savior; the son born to her is, like Moses, snatched from the dragon of water and take up to the throne…
The Messiah is here seen under the type of Moses. The woman’s pain in travail may recall the curse of Eve, whose offspring would ultimately wound the serpent, so that Israel is seen as representing all humanity.
What do you learn here about conflict between the Christian church and demonic evil?
Royal wedding song
“…On your right stands the queen, in gold from Ophir. Listen, daughter, pay careful attention: forget your nation and your ancestral home; the king will fall in love with your beauty.”
(Psalm 45: 9 -10)
This is a royal wedding song which celebrates the groom, the bride and their future…
In the messianic interpretation: Israel, like the ancestral figure Abraham, must sever all links with the surrounding pagan world, thus leaving the ‘ancestral home’ in order to receive ‘sons’…
The fact of resurrection
“…But Christ has in fact been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of all who have fallen asleep… Just as all men die in Adam, so all men will be brought to life in Christ.”
(1Corinthians 15:20, 22)
When did you connect the resurrection of Christ with your own victory over death?
What difference has that made to you in terms of hope and courage? What new sense of purpose does this give you?
Mary’s Song * The Magnificat
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my savior; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid…”
(Luke 1: 39-56)
Of the attributes of God celebrated in Mary’s song, which do you appreciate the most?
Which challenges you the most? Why?
How does your life reflect God’s concern for justice, mercy, and deliverance? Would Mary consider you ‘God’s humble servant’ or a ‘proud, rich ruler”? Why?
Mary is taken up to heaven; a chorus of angels exults!

Back of the School
We as Catholic Community wish to all the children, younger’s, administrators, workers and teachers for very good year 2010-2011. May God our Father be with you and protect, and give to you His wisdom and love.
We pray for you every day; we promises.
Good year!
KIDS CLUB
Another ‘thank you’ to all who donated, prayed, or staffer this outreach to our local elementary school this past year. We want to appeal to all our members to consider helping in this creative way to connect with many young families outside of our church.
This coming year, we are upgrading our curriculum, doing more training in classroom management and adding room space over at the Community Center. We think we can improve a lot on our efforts from last year by doing this. Pray also for the workers who will come from Mountain Bible Church as we partner with them for his.

4 Stages of Marriage – The 4 stages of marriage are: (1) Romance, (2) Disillusionment, (3) Misery, and (4) Awakening. Many marriages experience the first 3 Stages. Marriages that end in divorce never make it to the 4th stage of Awakening. Don’t give up without learning about the 4th Stage of Awakening. If your marriage suffers from Disillusionment or Misery please contact Retrouvaille. SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 25, 2010
Abraham Pleads For Sodom
“The Lord said, ‘The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is a bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.’ Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Then Abraham approached him and said: ‘Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?”
(Genesis 18: 20-23)
What impresses you about the conversation between God and Abraham?
- God’s willingness to hear Abraham
- Abraham’s boldness
- God’s expectation of Abraham
- Abraham’s compassion
When God gives me the opportunity to make a difference, I: remain silent; make a tentative suggestion; insist on what I think is right; trust God to work it out.
In order for salvation to come to my community, family, I am willing to:
Pray for it daily; share my faith with others; get involved with my neighbors; respect and build up the faith of others; contribute to the ministry of my church; rebuild bridges of trust; engage in community work where I can demonstrate God’s love.
“When I called, you answered me!”
(Psalm 138: 3)
What exterior factors encourage you to praise God? What interior ones?
Do you feel that God is fulfilling a purpose in you? How do you find it?
Christ alone is the true head of men and angels
“God the Father has brought you (us) to life with him, he has forgiven us (you) all our sins.”
(Colossians 2: 13)
The Law was able to do nothing about a sinner except condemn him to death; this death sentence is what God the Father had carried out on his own Son in order to suppress it for the rest of the world, and it was for this very reason that God’s Son was ‘made sin’, and ‘cursed’ by the Law. In the person of his Son, whom he allowed to be executed, God nailed up and destroyed our death warrant, as well as all the charges it made against us.
Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer
“…One of his disciples said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray…”
(Luke 11: 1-13)
The Lord’s Prayer
Adoration of God: “Father, hallowed be your name.” I spend time praising God for who he is holy and compassionate Father. I know God is holy and compassionate by what I see in my history, in creation, in my relationships and in Jesus Christ.
Longing for his Reign: “Your kingdom come”
I spend time welcoming God’s influence into my life and into my world. I would like to know God’s will for my life in the following area: family problems; political issues; life planning; ethical questions.
Daily Needs! Relational Healing! Strength for the spiritual battle!

The Three Visitors
The apparition at Mamre
“The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
…Then his guest said, ‘I shall visit you again next year without fail, and your wife will then have a son.”
(Genesis 18: 1-2, 10)
In its definitive form this “Yahwistic” narrative recounts an apparition of Yahweh accompanied by two “men” who, according to 19:1, are angels.
In these three, to whom Abraham addressed a single act of homage, many of the Father saw a foreshadowing of the doctrine of the Trinity, a doctrine that was revealed only in the New Testament.
Where in your life is God telling you, “It’s never too late”? Or, “no need to rush around”?
Abraham, the just and upright man, graciously host three visitors. And you welcome the estrangers?
“Lord, who may dwell in your sanctuary”?
“Who may live on your holy mountain”?
(Psalm 15:1)
Where would your dream house be? What feature would have to be present?
Paul’s labors in the service of the pagans
“It makes me happy to suffer for you…I became the servant of the Church when God made me responsible for delivering God’s message to you, the message which was a mystery hidden for generations and centuries and had now been revealed to his saints… The mystery is Christ among you, your hope of glory.”
(Colossians 1: 24-26, 27)
How has finding Christ been like uncovering buried treasure for you?
Be open to receive the message and person of Jesus, and being receptive to the “mystery of Christ” as he comes to us through one another.
At the Home of Martha and Mary
“”Jesus came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feel listening to what he said.”
(Luke 10: 38-39)
How do these two sisters differ? Why is Mary’s choice better? What is Jesus point?
In your opinion, what are the good points and the blind spots of both Mary and Martha?
Who are you most like?
“As for the part in the rich soil, this is people with a noble and generous heart who heard the word and takes it to themselves and yields a harvest through their perseverance.”

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
July 4, 2010
Judgment and Hope
“Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her, all you who love her; all you who mourn over her.”
(Isaiah 66: 10)
What is one of the most beautiful churches or cathedrals you have seen? What emotions did it evoke as you walked in? As you joined in the worship service?
Did you ever do something to please your parents or teachers which invoked their displeasure instead? Tell about it. How did you feel?
Corporate act of thanksgiving
“Acclaim God, all the earth, play music to the glory of his name; glorify him with your praises… all the earth bows down to you… Come and see what marvels God has done… Come and listen… Blessed be God who neither ignored my prayer nor deprived me of his love.”
(Psalm 66: 1, 4, 5, 16, and 20)
Who does the psalmist call to worship (‘all the earth’)? Why? What types of things can mankind ‘come and see’?
All the earth does not bow to God. What is the point of saying so? What is your vision of a world at peace with God?
What sacrifices should you make this week for the Lord?
A New Creation
“As for me, the only thing I can boast about is the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ…what matters if for him to become an altogether new creature. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule…”
(Galatians 6:14, 15, 16)
In what ways do people today tamper with the gospel of the cross to make it less “offensive” to others? Have you been tempted to do so? How?
How has coming to Christ changed your attitudes toward the common values and ideas of the world?
The mission of the seventy-two disciples
“… The Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him… Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals…”
(Luke 10: 3)
Why does he send the disciples out two-by-two? Why does he send them ahead of him?
How do you feel about the harvest where you live? Are people ripe for the gospel? What would it take for you to be more involved in the harvest?
When have you feel like a lamb among wolves? What did you learn from that experience?
“Let the peace of CHRIST control your hearts; let the word of CHRIST dwell in you richly.” Alleluia!

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
June 27, 2010
The Call of Elisha
“…Elisha was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah…”
(1 King 19:19-20)
What’s the point of the cloak-throw (v.19)?
Has God ever asked you “What are you doing here”? What is your answer?
Yahweh, my heritage
“Lord, my heritage, my cup, you, and you only, hold my lot secure; I bless Lord, who is my counselor, and in the night my inmost self instructs me; you will reveal the path of life to me, give me unbounded joy in your presence, and at your right hand everlasting pleasures.”
(Psalm 16: 2, 5, 7, 11)
It is the Lord alone who is to hold fast our lot.
Christian liberty
“When Christ freed us, he meant us to remain free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery…
My brothers and sisters, you were called, as you know, to liberty; but be careful, or this liberty will provide an opening for self-indulgence. Serve one another, rather, in works of love…”
(Galatians 5: 1, 13)
Paul distinguishes between true freedom and license.
The Cost of Following Jesus
“Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.’
Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
(Luke 9: 58, 62)
If Jesus were to say to you “Follow me-today,” and you were to use one of your favorite excuses for putting things off, what would happen?
Jesus insists that those who follow him must abandon all material or psychological securities, walking ever forward without looking back.

Blessed Junipero Serra July 1
1713 – 1784
Father Serra was born in Spain and chose the name of one of the companions of St. Francis Junipero, when he entered the Franciscan Order. He was a distinguished preacher and scholar, but, inspired by the mission work of St. Francis Solanus in South America, he longed to be a missionary instead. In 1749, he traveled to Mexico and worked in the Baja Peninsula for 18 years. Then, when the Spaniards took over Upper California in 1767, Father Serra accompanied the Spanish forces to San Diego, and established his first mission. He founded nine missions up and down the length of California before he died, and 12 more were founded after his death. Father Serra’s zeal for the faith “brought the gospel of Christ to the people of Mexico and California and firmly established the Church among them.”
May we, too, always be eager to share the gift of faith with those who have not yet heard the Gospel.

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
May 30, 2010
Blessed be GOD the FATHER and his only-begotten SON and the HOLY SPIRIT: for he has show that he loves us!
Wisdom as creator. Wisdom’s Call.
“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began… I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in the human race.”
(Proverbs 8: 22-23, 30-31)
If “Christ” could be substituted for “Wisdom” in this passage, how would that affect your view or application of its main points?
For example, what would “finds life” mean?
How can you find “Wisdom” or “life” without Christ?
How is your personal search for Wisdom progressing?
Would wisdom make your list of “Ten Most Precious Things in the World”?
Why? Solomon says wisdom is “more precious than rubies”: Are jewelry, money, or possessions on your “Top Ten’ list?
“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
(Psalm 8:1)
Can we do anything we want to God’s creation? What are our limits? Responsibilities?
Faith guarantees salvation. Peace and Joy
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have faith, grace, rejoice, and hope of the glory of God…we also rejoice in our sufferings…”
(Romans 5:1-5)
What three words best describe your life before you were a Christian? How about now? Why the change?
The Work of the Holy Spirit
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.”
(John 16:12-13)
Of the various roles of the Holy Spirit described here, which one have you come to appreciate recently? How so?
The new order of things that is to result from Christ’s death and resurrection.
Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; to God who is, who was, and who is to come!

God is exalted in mystery and majesty, triune and one in glory, yet nearer to us than we are to ourselves through the divine indwelling. What can we offer but praise that dares to go beyond the small boundaries of our finite understanding into the realm of light inaccessible?

PENTECOST SUNDAY
May 23, 2010
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
“When Pentecost day came round they had all met in one room, when suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the entire house in which they were sitting; and something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit…”
(Acts 2: 1-4)
Why did God wait until Pentecost (a celebrative harvest festival and time of Giving of the Law. Dt 16:9-10) to give the Holy Spirit?
If you had been there, what would you have seen, heard, and felt? Would you respond more like those in verse 12 or 13; “Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, ‘What does this mean?’ …they have too much wine.”
“LORD, SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT, AND RENEW THE FACE ON THE EARTH.”
Spiritual gifts (charismata); the variety and the unity of gifts; the analogy of the body
“No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord’ unless he is under the influence of the Holy Spirit.”
(1 Corinthians 12: 3b)
What was the best gift you ever received or gave? What was the occasion?
How many different kinds of service or work situation have you had since you finished school?
Appearance to the disciples
“Jesus came and stood among them… he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those sins you retain, they are retained.”
(John 20: 22 -23)
The breath of Jesus is a symbol of the Spirit (‘breath’ in Hebrew); he sends forth the Spirit who will make all things anew; to strengthen them to go forth in the name of the Lord; ‘to renew the face of the earth.”

THE ASCENSION
OF THE LORD
May 16, 2010
Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven
“In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day He gave His instructions to the apostles He has chosen through the Holy Spirit, and taken up to heaven… ”
(Acts 1: 1-2)
Luke shows how the ministry of the Lord is continued by his apostles through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Theophilus this may be a historical person or he may represent any devoted reader - the name means “beloved of God.”
The ascension is a great fest of hope! The ascension makes us feel like human beings again! How do we respond to such Good News?
“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth!
(Psalm 47: 1-2)
Have you ever seen a famous person in the flesh? Did he or she seem different than you imagined? How often do you clap your hands or shout for joy in church?
In what way is God King of all the earth when so many people ignore and disobey him?
Judaism does not teach that all should become Jews. Do you think God wants everyone to become a Christian? Even Jews?
Do you enjoy loud singing, clapping and praise? How often do your parish services give you a sense of awe?
The triumph and the supremacy of Christ
“May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give you a spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed, to bring you to full knowledge of Him. May he enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see what hope his call holds for you…”
(Ephesians 1:17-18)
Saint Paul prays that we may come to a deep knowledge of God and of what God has done for us in Christ.
As members of the Church, we experience the power that God displayed in raising Christ from the dead.
The Ascension
“Then Jesus took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands be blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.”
(Luke 21: 50-51)
Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in his name, reminding them that he is always present through his Spirit. Jesus ascended to his Father amid cries of gladness, we are to be his witnesses, mindful of the great hope to which we are called.
LIFE, HOLINESS and JOY!

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 9, 2010
The Council’s Letter to Gentile Believers
“Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: ‘Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.’
Then the apostles and elders… ‘It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves not to saddle you with any burden beyond these essentials…”
(Acts 15: 1, 22, 28)
In your community’s churches, what are the ethnic, social, and racial lines of division?
What is your relationship like with believers in these different churches?
What roles do experience, theology, and practical consideration play in the decision-making process of this council?
Harvest song
“Let the nations praise you, God, let all the nations praise you!”
(Psalm 67:5)
What blessings has God brought into your life? For whose benefit? For what wider purpose?
The messianic Jerusalem! Jesus Is Coming!
“Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done…
He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
(Revelation 22: 12, 20)
God pursues his design whatever human being may do!
The Church, wife of the Messiah!
The appeal is addressed to the Messiah; it is the Marana tha refrain of the liturgical assemblies, expressive of the Christian’ longing for the parousis.
Jesus Prays for All Believers
“Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said: Father, May they all be one. May they be one in us…”
(John 17: 1, 20-21)
What is the best reason you have heard for not believing in Christianity?
The time for the sacrifice draws near: in this prayer Jesus offers himself and intercedes for his disciples.
Life, Holiness and Joy!!!

For a Mother
Mother, your voice learning to soothe, your new child was the first home-sound, we heard before we could see.
Your younger eyes gazing on us, was the first mirror, where we glimpsed, what to be seen, could mean.
Mother, your nearness filled the air, an umbilical garden for all the seeds of longing that stirred in our infant hearts.
You nurtured and fostered this space to root all our quietly gathering intensity that could grow nowhere else.
Mother, formed from the depths beneath your heart, you know us from the inside out, no needs or seas or others could ever erase that.
(Benedictus by John O’Donohue)
God Bless you women and mothers!!!

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
May 2, 2010
The mission is disrupted
“Paul and Barnabas having preached the Good News in that town and made a considerable number of disciples… They put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the faith. We all have to experience many hardships’ they said before we enter the kingdom of God.”
(Acts 14: 21 – 22)
Seeing Paul and Barnabas’ courage, faith, and endurance, how are you challenged to serve the Lord more completely?
What was one of the biggest misunderstandings about Christianity you had to overcome before you could believe?
Hymn of praise to Lord the king
“I sing your praises, God my King, I bless your name for ever and ever, blessing you day after day, and praising your name for ever and ever.”
(Psalm 145: 1)
What kind of ruler is God to you: (a) benevolent king? (b) Harsh dictator? (c) Ceremonial monarch? (d) Democratic leader? (e) Prime minister? What has influenced your picture of God? Does it need adjusting?
The heavenly Jerusalem
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared now, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the holy city, and the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven…”
(Revelation 21: 1-2)
Where is one of the most beautiful places you have ever been? What impressed you about that place?
How do you think your city would be different if God were the mayor?
The Last Supper
“My little children, I shall not be with you much longer. I give you a new commandment; love one another; just as I have loved you, you also must love one another.”
(John 13: 33. 34)
If faith is scarce, it is because there is too much selfishness in the world, too much egoism. Faith, in order to the authentic, has to be generous and giving.
Love and faith go hand in hand…

“I have made you a light for the nations so that my salvation may reach the ends of the earth.”
(Acts 13:47)
What did you feel the first time you left home on your own?
What kind of opposition have you faced because of your faith? How do you usually respond to opposition?
A psalm; for giving thanks.
“We are his people, the flock that he pastures.”
(Psalm 100:3)
Which of the six reasons most motivates you to praise God?
Which is the least exciting?
Is your expression of joy too limited? Too private? Do you need the freedom to have a more joyful life?
The Great Multitude in White Robes
“These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”
(Revelation 7:14)
What is your greatest tribulation or persecution? How difficult does that seem next to the majesty of God pictured here? How will you incorporate this glimpse of heavenly worship into earthly walk?
Jesus is the Good Shepherd
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me… I and the Father are one.”
(John 10: 27, 30)
What has convinced you that Jesus is the Messiah? What “old ways” of looking at Jesus must you overcome by faith?
What difference does it make that Jesus is God and not just a man?
Would the promise of verse 28 mean much otherwise?

DIOCESAN VOCATIONS PRAYER
Good and gracious Father, bless our Diocese of Monterey with consecrate men and women to serve the church. Increase the number of priests who announce the Gospel and celebrate the sacraments. Lord, give to your priests a generous heart that they may follow the example of Jesus our Good Shepherd, and through the intercession of your servant St. John Vianney, grant them the grace to love their ministry. We pray also for women that they may be inspired to follow you by serving others in religious life. O Virgin Mary, Lady of Bethlehem, sustain with your grace all those who have been called to serve. Amen.

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
April 11, 2010
Easter Season
The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one “great Sunday”.
The Apostles Heal Many
“Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirit, and all of them were healed.”
(Acts 5:16)
What is the ultimate authority in your life?
“Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia”
“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
(Psalm 118: 22-24)
Have you ever felt like a “stone the builders rejected”?
How did you handle it?
Why do you suppose many saints called this his favorite psalm?
Where do you need help right now? Joy? Victory? Success?
What promise do you hold on to?
One Like a Son of Man
“On the Lord’s Day (Sunday) I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”
(Revelation 1: 10, 17-18)
Close your eyes; meditate on, and what do you see, in this voice to speak to you.
Jesus Appears to His Disciple and to Thomas
“… Jesus came and stood among them and said, “peace be with you!’… Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side…”
(John 20 19, 27)
Of all the things Jesus must have said, why does John record “peace be with you” three times?
How does this relate to their fears?
How does Thomas’ personality compare to Mary Magdalene’s?
What evidence of “life have you seen as a result of believing in Jesus Christ?

…and may your heart be blessed with new joys that blossom all through a beautiful springtime.
Have a Wonderful EASTER!
Much Love, Fr. Eugenio

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION
March 28, 2010
Israel’s Sin and the Servant’s Obedience
“I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting…Therefore have I set my face like flint, and know I will not be put to shame.”
(Isaiah 50: 6-7)
Have you ever been verbally or physically abused because of your faith?
How did you respond?
What did your relationship to God feel like at that time?
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?”
(Psalm 22: 1)
When you are stricken with grief, feeling abandoned even by God, how do you express yourself: Disbelief? Tears? Anger? Woe is me? Wanting to crawl back into the womb? Thinking about your death? Bargaining with God/ Faith in spite of a bleak outlook?
At such times, does it help to know that Jesus experienced despair and felt the same way?
Imitating Christ’s Humility
“Who, being in every nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing… he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross!
(Philippians 2: 6, 8)
Jesus, humbling himself out of love for us, did not shield his face from buffets and spitting, but offered his life on the cross. He relied on his Father’s love.
The Last Super - Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives – Peter Disowns Jesus – The Guards Mock Jesus – Jesus before Pilate and Herod – The Crucifixion – Jesus’ Death – Jesus’ Burial
“It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining… Jesus called out a loud voice, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’ When he had said this, he breathed his last.”
(Luke 23: 44 -45)
How do you view the crucifixion: Necessary evil? Common tragedy? Cruel and unusual punishment? Sacrifice for sin? Triumph over injustice? Why?
Who in this story do you identify with most?
With least? Why?
Pass from death to LIFE, from sin to HOLINESS, from sadness to EASTER JOY!

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
March 21, 2010
God’s Mercy and Israel’s Unfaithfulness
“This is what the Lord says- Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.
(Isaiah 43: 16. 18-19)
What has God done in your past that you especially can look to as evidence of his presence with you?
What “stream in the desert” is bubbling up for you now?
What “new thing” has the Lord done in your life? What is he doing now?
“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.”
(Psalm 126:3)
Has God ever done something so great you had to pinch yourself to see if you were dreaming?
How does God tend to answer your prayers: A flash flood or a long plating season?
No Confidence in the Flesh
“… I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him…”
(Philippians 3: 8-9)
How much merit would you assign to each “confidence in the flesh”: Good looks? Good works? Reputation? Religious traditions?
How can a person know he/she is “found in Christ?”
Woman Caught in Adultery
“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery… ‘Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”
(John 8:3. 5.)
How does the way Jesus treated this woman help you face some of the sins you struggle with? Jesus accepts you “as is.” Does that free you to change, or does it reinforce your bad behavior? How so?
What can you learn from Jesus about helping a friend who has fallen?
Let the one among you who is without sin is the first to throw a stone at her.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
March 14, 2010
The Passover kept
“On that same day after the Passover, on which they ate of the produce of the land, the manna ceased. No longer was there manna for the Israelites.”
(Joshua 5: 12)
What is significant about “celebrating the Passover”? “No manna”? Eating the produce? How did this force Israel to grow up?
How has God “stopped the manna” in your life?
What has he substituted for it?
How has that weaning process helped you be more responsible?
“Taste and see that the Lord is good”
(Psalm 34:8)
How does the Christian life “taste” to you: Sweet, sour, spicy, salty, bitter, and bland?
Why? O have you only sampled God?
Why is that?
The Ministry of Reconciliation
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”
(2 Corinthians 5:17. 20)
What does “reconciliation” mean?
Knowing what it is like to be alienated and reconciled in other relationships, how is it going with God: Still a family feud, a truce, or have you made up?
The parable of God’s mercy
“…The Father said, ‘now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.”
(Luke 15: 32)
How have you experienced God as this Father?
If you had to compare your spiritual journey to the prodigal’s journey, where are you now?
At home, but not too happy; in a far country; coming to my senses; on my way home, but not sure what I’ll find; I’ve just arrived/feeling great; or enjoying the fattened calf and the party…
Christ, our Passover, has entrusted to us the message of reconciliation: let us forgive one another and celebrate the unconditional and abundant love of God our Father.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
March 7, 2010
Moses and the Burning Bush
“There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush…’
(Exodus 3:2)
Recall an event in your life when you felt like you were ‘standing on holy ground”.
What was sacred about that moment?
How has that moment served to establish a right relationship between God and you?
What would God have to do to get your attention and commitment to take on a new mission in life?
How would you likely respond if he called you by name?
“The Lord is compassionate and gracious; slow to anger, abounding in love.”
(Psalm 103:8)
Warning From Israel’s History
“These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
(1 Corinthians 10:11-12)
What temptation do you most consistently have to face?
Repent or Perish
“And Jesus told them this parable: ‘There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none…”
(Luke 10:6)
How would you compare your life to the “fig tree”? If you had ‘one more year’ like the fig tree to turn your life around, what would you do? What ‘fruit’ do you want to be producing by this time next year?
Repent, says the Lord; the kingdom of heaven is at hand!

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
February 28, 2010
God’s Covenant with Abram
“Abram believed the Lord and he credited it to him as righteousness. God also said to him, ‘I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give this land to take possession of it.”
(Genesis 15: 6-7)
How do you reassure someone your word is good: ‘Cross your heart and hope to die’?
Give Scout’s honor? Involve your lawyer? Invoke God’s seal? Put up and shut up?
The Lord credited Abram as “righteous”. What affirming word might God use to describe or credit you today?
“The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear?”
(Psalm 27:1)
How has the Lord been like a “light” or a “stronghold” in your life this past month?
What situation has driven you to him to find shelter?
What words describe your sense of his presence at the point of need?
The true way of Christian salvation
“…I repeat it today with tears, there are many who are behaving as the enemies of the cross of Christ.
They are destined to be lost.
They make foods into their god, and their glory is in their shame.”
(Philippians 3:18-19)
How do you see the opposition of verses 18-19 at work today?
How would you “stand firm” against them?
The Transfiguration
“As Jesus prayed, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing became brilliant as lightning. Suddenly there were two men there talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.”
(Luke 9:29-31)
Where have you experienced God in an unusual way? What happened?
Lent is a time of transformation. As we gaze in the dark faith of prayer upon the glory of God revealed in Jesus Christ, we are transformed into his likeness. As we leave the work of prayer for the work of charity in our world, we live in his likeness.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
February 21, 2010
Moses recounts great events of salvation history
“My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous…”
(Deuteronomy 26:5)
What were the Israelites confessing? Why? In what way should this confessing climax?
What confession would you make to accompany your giving?
“I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
(Psalm 91:2)
What does it mean to make God your refuge?
“If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
(Romans 10:9)
What is one major way your confession of Christ as Lord has influenced your life?
What are the stumbling blocks in your walk with God?
The Temptation of Jesus
“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil…”
(Luke 4:1)
If the devil had three “shots” at you, what three temptations would he use? How do these compare to Jesus’ temptations?
What can help you resist these appeals to self-interest, power, and spiritual pride?
What encouragement do you find here?
Jesus is ever faithful, resisting temptation to forsake his Father’s mission, trusting in God’s love.

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 14, 2010
“Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the Lord…
But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him…”
(Jeremiah 17: 5, 7)
What times of spiritual “drought” have you experienced? What keeps you going during those dry times?
How honest are you with yourself?
Could your heart be deceiving you about the motives of some of your actions at work?
At home? In relationships?
Blessed are they who hope in the Lord!
(Psalm 1:1)
Where have you searched for happiness? Where do you find it?
The Resurrection of the Dead
“But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
(1 Corinthians 15: 12)
When did you connect the resurrection of Christ with your own victory over death?
What difference has that made to you in terms of hope and courage?
What new sense of purpose does this give you?
What arguments have you found helpful in showing unbelieving friends that Christ did rise from the dead?
Blessings and Woes
Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God… But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort…”
(Luke 6: 20, 24)
How do the values Jesus talks about here compare with the values you are sold every day on TV?
Which set of values do you and your family by into?
Which promise means the most to you now?

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
February 7, 2010
Isaiah’s Commission
“I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings…”
What do you think might have been Isaiah’s initial response as the vision began to unfold? Awe, fear, guilt, or motivation.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
(Isaiah 6: 1-2 5)
What did Isaiah mean when he said, “My lips are unclean and I live among a people of unclean lips”?
There is a problem with my speech; there is a problem with my heart; I’m just like the others; or God’s knows everything!
“In the sight of the angles I will sing your praises, Lord.”
(Psalm 138: 2)
“Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand… For what I received I passed on to you as a first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve…”
(1 Corinthians 15: 1, 3-4)
If you had to explain four facts of the gospel to an interested friend, what would you say? How would you counter those who “explain away” the resurrection naturalistically?
Where would you be now if not for God’s grace?
The Calling of the First Disciples
“Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.’ So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.”
(Luke 5: 10-11)
What is it going to take to get you going?
Time to consider the cost; a little support from others; a good kick in the pants; time to get myself together; help to clean up my life; or frankly, I don’t know.

From Bishop Richard
Dear People of the Diocese of Monterey
I write to you in deep gratitude on behalf of the United States Bishops and Catholic relief Services. The people of the Diocese are always charitable when there is a human need, such as the devastation left since the January 12th earthquake in Haiti.
You have responded to the cries of your brothers and sisters. To date our diocese has collected over $ 185,000. I am deeply grateful for your generous spirit. These monies will be used to provide food, shelter, medical supplies, and in the months to come, will help rebuild the Archdiocese.
I am humbled by your response and ask you continue to support and pray for the people of Haiti and all who are helping in the relief efforts.
Most Rev. Richard J. Garcia, D.D.
Bishop of Monterey

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 31, 2010
“No prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown.”
Thus did Jeremiah and Jesus encounter opposition and lack of faith; thus did both place their hope in the Lord.
Paul speaks eloquently of the greatest of all the gifts: love.
The Call of Jeremiah
“The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew (chose) you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
(Jeremiah 1:4-5)
Where were you born: At home? Hospital? Taxi? Else-where? What stories about the event have you been told?
Which relative made you feel wanted and safe as a child?
“In you, O Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame… Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.”
(Psalm 71: 1, 3)
Love
“Eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way… Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs…”
(1 Corinthians 12: 31; 13:4-5)
What is love? List the seven characteristics of what love is, and the eight that it is not.
(Vv.4-7)
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
“All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him down the cliff.”
(Luke 4: 28-29)
Why would Jesus’ hometown neighbors be so furious? He discounted the; he made them look bad; he was just a carpenter’s son; he thought he was better that they were; or he would rather go to the non-Jews who would accept him.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 24, 2010
Ezra Read the Law
Ezra the priest stood before the people and proclaimed the book of the law. Then he “interpreted it so that all could understand.” He declared the day holy and urged the people to rejoice.
What acts of God do you celebrate with regularity and joy as one of his pilgrim people?
Your words, Lord, are Spirit and Life.
(Psalm 19:8)
One Body, Many Parts
The body is one and has many members, but all members, though many are one body. Further, each part is indispensable. So it is with Christ’s body; we, though many, are one.
In the verses 12-13, in what ways does Saint Paul stress the unity of the believers?
Jesus at Nazareth
Returning to Nazareth, Jesus entered the synagogue and read from the prophet Isaiah. After reading, Jesus proclaimed “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
In the Gospel of Luke 4:18-19, Jesus applied five Old Testament promises to his mission on earth. Which of these five forms of rejections can you connect with the Gospel in your life today?
POVERTY (downtrodden, underprivileged): to receive hope and dignity.
IMPRISONMENT (physically, psychologically or politically captive): to receive freedom from bondage.
BLINDNESS (physical disability often meaning spiritual darkness): to receive new sight to recognize God’s perspective and new life.
OPPRESSION (political and economic disadvantage): to receive release and new freedom from forces holding you down.
DEBT (every 50 years all debts were canceled): to receive the Jubilee Year’s release from debt of every sort.

STEWARDSHIP
Abram put his faith in the Lord, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. (Genesis 15:6)
Faith and trust in God is such a difficult thing. We yearn for the stability that God brings, but at the same time are so afraid to let go of actability that God brings, but at the same time are so afraid to let go of our own will. This dichotomy of fear and desire is a constant theme in our lives. Because of this, faith is not the refuge of the weak-minded but the domain of the brave. The Israelites trusted in God when they heard the proclamation of Ezra the prophet and had faith that God would fulfill his promises. We have an even greater prophet in Jesus Christ. Let us rest our faith on him and let him fulfill the deepest desire of our hearts.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 17, 2010
At Cana in Galilee, Jesus performed the first of his signs, revealing his glory to his disciples, and later to the nations. He has revealed as well the manifestation of the Spirit who distributes different gifts as he chooses.
Zion’s New Name
“…You will be called by a new name…you will be called my Delight is in her and your land “Espoused.”
(Isaiah 62:2, 4)
Do you know the meaning of your names? For what reason were you given your first and middle names?
Of the new names God gives to the people he saves, which one means the most to you right now? Do you normally tend to think of God’s relationship with you as that of a bride to her waiting bridegroom? Or a judge to a criminal?
“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.”
(Psalm 96: 1)
What’s your favorite new song on the radio?
From church? Where else do you hear new material?
Spiritual Gifts
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues…”
(1 Corinthians 12: 7 – 10)
What was the best gift you ever received or gave? How is the diversity of the gifts related to the unity of the Father, Son and Spirit?
Jesus Changes Water to Wine
“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee, Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.”
(John 2: 1-2)
What is the funniest thing you’ve witnessed at a wedding?
Jesus is not known as a miracle-worker, so why does Mary his mother approach him?
If you could choose any miracle to start you off in a new job or ministry, what would it be?
The joy of God is a wine that changes the drab, cold, colorless substance of human nature into the rich, crimson, warm vitality of supernatural life. It changes discouragement to hope, doubt to faith, it lights up the mind and in its light men see that the problems of the world today, which seemed insurmountable, are straws in the power of God, and his name even a creature as little and weak as man can overcome them.
How can such a changes of heart happen? Only by a miracle, it is true, and who can work such a miracle but Christ? When a man comes to this world with Christ in his heart, he too can work this miracle in Christ’s name…

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
January 10, 2010
Almighty, eternal GOD, when the SPIRIT descended upon JESUS at his baptism in the Jordan, you revealed him as your own beloved Son.
Keep us, your children born of water and the Spirit, faithful to our calling.
Comfort for God’s People
“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, and that she had received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.”
(Isaiah 40: 2)
What was the most welcome, exciting news you ever received? Why was it so welcome? How did you feel? How would this message affect you if you were one of these defeated people torn away from your home, your faith, and you way of life?
“Praise the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty.”
(Psalm 104: 1)
Doing What Is Good
“When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior…”
(Titus 3: 4-6)
In what situations do you least exhibit your faith? In doing what is good, which are you motivated by: Call of duty? Fear of judgment? Hope of Christ’s return? Gratitude for what God has done for you? Desire to make peace in your relationships? Needs of others?
The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus
“… Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
(Luke 3: 21-22)

The Celebration of the Christian Mystery
Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening; and the Eucharist which nourishes the disciple with Christ’s Body and Blood for this transformation in Christ.
Baptism is God’s most beautiful and magnificent gift…
We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God’s Lordship. St.Gregory of Nazianzus
THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
January 3, 2010
May you have the spirit of Christmas which is PEACE the gladness of Christmas which is HOPE and the heart of Christmas which is LOVE
The Glory of Zion
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you…Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn…”
(Isaiah 60: 1-3)
Have you ever witnessed a total eclipse of the sun or moon? How did you feel?
All nations are invited to sing the Lord’s praises…
“All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him.”
(Psalm 72: 11)
How do you feel about nationalism? Who rules you? Why have human governments? Does God approve of all world leaders and their actions?
Could you honestly say that God is your ruler? If not, who is? If so, what about your life reveals God’s rule? What does it mean to have God as King?
Paul the Preacher to the Gentiles
“…Through the Gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.”
(Ephesians 3: 6)
Paul’s intense desire was to make Christ known. How does this relate to what drives you in life? What kinds of people would feel awkward in the church? What can you do to break down those barriers? Why is it important to do so?
The Visit of the Magi
“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, the saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.”
(Matthew 2: 10-11)
In your “journey” toward God, how are you like the Magi? Unlike them? Have you had to leave anything to follow Jesus? What is the “gold, incense, and myrrh” in your life? How have you offered this to Jesus?
This is the glorious day on which Christ himself, the savior of the world, appeared; the prophets foretold him, the angels worshiped him; the Magi saw his star and rejoiced to lay their treasures at his feet.

STEWARDSHIP
“You have set on his head a crown of pure gold.” (Psalm 21:4)
Traditionally, Epiphany celebrates three manifestations of God in Christ: to the Magi, at the baptism in the Jordan, and at Cana. The liturgies of this season often present the incarnation under the imagery of a marriage between divinity and humanity in Jesus Christ, the wise and just King, greater than Solomon.
